The international women's cycling classic in Montignoso, on the roads of Versilia
The Trofeo Oro in Euro - Women's Bike Race is the international women's cycling race that brings the roads of Montignoso to life every year in early March. Located in the province of Massa-Carrara, Tuscany, this Versilia town has hosted the event since 2013. The race has grown to become a staple of the women's UCI calendar, a true classic that attracts the best teams and the strongest athletes on the world stage.
The race takes place entirely within the municipal territory and the coastal district of Cinquale, where the start and finish lines are located along Viale IV Novembre, just a stone's throw from the beach. It is organized by A.S.D. Montignoso Ciclismo in partnership with the Oro in Euro jewelry brand, which gives the trophy its name.
The 106.8 km route is designed to provide excitement until the very last meter. The first part unfolds on a flat circuit of approximately 13 km, repeated five times between the coastline and the Versilia plains. The finale becomes selective with two passes over a hilly circuit that includes the famous Fortezza climb, which is about 3.5 km long with an average gradient of around 6%. It is here, a dozen kilometers from the finish, that the race is almost always decided before the technical descent and the flat stretch that leads the athletes back toward Cinquale.
Over the years, the Trofeo Oro in Euro has seen some of the strongest riders in women's cycling triumph. Its position on the calendar, immediately following the Strade Bianche, makes it a strategic event for WorldTour teams, who field top-tier rosters. Notable protagonists of recent editions include the Italian Elisa Longo Borghini and the Dutch rider Karlijn Swinkels, both of whom have secured prestigious victories on the roads of Versilia.
Beyond the competitive aspect, the day of the race is a celebration for the entire Montignoso community. Spectators gather along the route, on the seafront, and on the Fortezza climb to cheer on the athletes and experience the thrill of an international race up close. The event showcases Versilia and the entire province of Massa-Carrara, bridging the beaches of the Tyrrhenian coast and the hinterland of the Apuan Alps.
The 14th edition of the Trofeo Oro in Euro - Women's Bike Race was held on Sunday, March 8, 2026, covering 106.8 km between Cinquale and the Fortezza climb, just after the Strade Bianche. On the Viale IV Novembre seafront, 28 teams started, five of which were WorldTour, totaling approximately 170 athletes from 14 nations.
The race was decided, as is tradition, on the double ascent of the Fortezza: the Italian Elisa Longo Borghini (UAE Team ADQ) launched the winning attack, finishing solo in Cinquale. Behind her, a total domination by her team, which placed the first four athletes: second was Karlijn Swinkels, third Dominika Wลodarczyk, and fourth Silvia Persico.
Total distance: 106.8 km. One-day international UCI race for elite women.
Cinquale di Montignoso is located along the Versilia coast. By car: A12 Genoa-Livorno motorway, take the Versilia (Massa) or Pietrasanta exit, then follow signs for the sea. By train: Forte dei Marmi-Seravezza-Querceta or Massa Centro stations, connected by local buses to the Cinquale area.
Start and finish on Viale IV Novembre, in Cinquale di Montignoso. The race takes place in early March, on a Sunday.
The event is free for the public: spectators can freely watch the athletes pass along the route. The best vantage points are the finish line on the seafront and the Fortezza climb.
