Three months of music, theatre, cinema, and dance in the city
When the long light of the solstice falls on the gulf, Trieste Estate takes centre stage. For three months, from June to August, the Municipality of Trieste fills the city with over three hundred events: major concerts, theatre performances, dance, open-air cinema, and niche reviews. It is the umbrella programme that gathers and brings into dialogue the entire summer cultural offering of the capital, from the historic centre to the outlying districts.
The beating heart is the San Giusto Castle, which overlooks the city from the top of the hill and hosts the main evening music programme. But Trieste Estate comes alive in many other spaces: the garden of the Sartorio Museum, the Muzio de Tommasini Public Garden, the Winckelmann Museum of Antiquities, Piazza Verdi, the Audace Pier, and the Rotondo Bastion. And then Piazza Unità d'Italia, the drawing-room overlooking the sea, which hosts concerts by major international artists.
The strength of Trieste Estate lies in bringing together about ten autonomous festivals and reviews under one banner, each with its own identity: Let's Play and the Ave Ninchi Festival for theatre, TriesteLovesJazz and Trieste Classica for music, the Trieste Brasil Festival for sounds from overseas, the ShorTS International Film Festival and Cinema Nordest for the big screen, up to Bloomsday, the Festival dell'Operetta (Operetta Festival), Triskell, and the Festival Approdi. A mosaic that speaks to all audiences, from children to lovers of Central European culture.
Experiencing Trieste Estate means discovering the cosmopolitan soul of a city that was once the port of the Habsburg Empire and a crossroads of languages and cultures. After the show, a walk along the Rive, a coffee in a historic café, or an evening dip in the sea at Barcola complete an experience that blends great culture with a Mediterranean atmosphere. Supported by the Friuli-Venezia Giulia Region, the festival is now one of the richest summer programmes in the Northeast.
The twentieth edition of Trieste Estate takes place from June 4 to August 31, 2026, with over three hundred events featuring music, theatre, dance, cinema, and culture, and a total investment of 1.1 million euros (420,000 from the tourist tax). The programme brings together original productions, historic festivals, and new artistic proposals.
The most anticipated event is the concert by Gorillaz in Piazza Unità d'Italia on July 25. The San Giusto Castle hosts a packed music season, while the festivals that make up the programme animate the city's entire summer.
