Mountain chestnuts and potatoes in the highest village in Irpinia
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Chestnut and Potato Festival takes place in Trevico, a small town in the Province of Avellino, Campania. At over 1,000 meters above sea level, it is the highest inhabited center in the region and the only one with its municipal seat above the thousand-meter mark. This is no minor detail: from up here, on clear days, the view spans four regions—Campania, Puglia, Molise, and Basilicata—and the event is enjoyed in the crisp, sharp air of the Irpinian autumn, winding through the stone alleys of the oldest village in the Baronia.
The festival was created to showcase two products that here are not just a gastronomic choice, but a true heritage: the Trevico chestnut and the mountain potato, both recognized as Traditional Agri-food Products of Campania. Cultivated on high-altitude terrain, they offer concentrated flavors and a cooking texture that makes them the stars of simple, hearty recipes passed down through generations.
At the stalls set up along the streets of the historic center, you can taste:
The formula, perfected over previous editions, alternates tastings with live entertainment. Over the years, the program has featured folk music groups from Southern Italy, street artists animating the village squares, and evening concerts: in 2025, the highlight was the live performance by the Dogana Blues Band, a group that blends blues, folk, and rock sounds. The illuminated streets, glowing braziers, and the scent of chestnuts create an atmosphere that remains one of the most cherished memories for visitors.
The event is promoted by the Municipality of Trevico together with the Pro Loco Pro Revico, with the involvement of the parish, local associations, and volunteers who manage the stalls. It is a community festival: the dishes are prepared by the men and women of the village, and the proceeds support local association activities. The event is part of the Sistema Irpinia tourism promotion circuit of the Province of Avellino.
Trevico is not on the way to anywhere: you only arrive here if you intend to, winding up the hairpin turns of the Baronia. Precisely for this reason, the festival has maintained a genuine character, far from the logic of large-scale tourist events. It is the perfect opportunity to discover a village of a few hundred inhabitants, its cathedral, its viewpoints, and a mountain cuisine that is found in very few other places in Campania. Those with time can combine the visit with a tour of the nearby villages of the Baronia and the upper Ufita valley.
At the time of our last check, the Municipality of Trevico and the Pro Loco Pro Revico had not yet released the dates for the new edition of the Chestnut and Potato Festival. The date indicated in this entry is therefore provisional and serves only to place the event in its usual period, autumn.
For reference, the eighth edition took place on Saturday, October 25th, and Sunday, October 26th, 2025, in the village's historic center, with stalls opening on Saturday from 6:00 PM and repeating on Sunday, including lunch service. One can therefore expect a similar structure, with food stalls along the village alleys, folk music, and street performers.
As soon as the program is published, we will update this page with dates, times, and appointments. In the meantime, we recommend following the official channels of the Municipality of Trevico and the Sistema Irpinia portal of the Province of Avellino, which publishes the calendar of Irpinian events.
By car — Trevico can be reached from the A16 Naples-Canosa motorway, taking the Grottaminarda or Vallata exit, then continuing along the provincial roads of the Baronia; the final stretch is a climb with hairpin turns up to the village, at over 1,000 meters altitude. From Avellino, the journey takes about an hour and a half, and from Foggia, just over an hour.
By train — there is no train station in Trevico: the most convenient hubs are Ariano Irpino/Grottaminarda or Foggia, from which you must continue by car or bus. By plane — the reference airports are Naples-Capodichino and Bari-Palese, both about two hours away by road.
On festival days, the historic center is largely closed to traffic: you can park in the areas at the entrance to the village and continue on foot, with a short uphill walk.
Access to the village and the shows is traditionally free; tastings are paid for directly at the individual food stalls. Prices for the upcoming edition have not yet been announced.
Accommodation in Trevico is limited to a few establishments: it is advisable to look for farmhouses and B&Bs in the municipalities of the Baronia and upper Irpinia, or in Ariano Irpino and Grottaminarda, half an hour away by car.
