The cycling challenge through the Umbrian Apennine passes
Tre Passi Umbri was born in 1993 as a road cycling race and has since transformed into a permanent cycling challenge: not a competition with rankings, but a personal challenge open to anyone who wants to cycle through the landscapes of the Umbrian Apennines. It is organised by A.S.D. Tre Passi Umbri, based in Spoleto.
Two mixed-terrain routes (asphalt and dirt) are planned: the short route of 95 km and the long route of 125 km. The long route starts from Spoleto and crosses Passo Spina, Verchiano, the Valico del Soglio, the village of Postignano, then Cerreto di Spoleto and Poggiodomo, before tackling Passo Gavelli-Capistrello and Forca di Cerro and returning to the start. Eight Umbrian municipalities are involved: Spoleto, Campello sul Clitunno, Foligno, Sellano, Cerreto di Spoleto, Poggiodomo, Sant'Anatolia di Narco, and Vallo di Nera.
As it is a challenge and not a race, there are no judges along the road: proof of passage is obtained by taking a selfie at the control points and sending it to the organisation, which carries out the checks. Among the control points are Cerreto di Spoleto and Triponzo, along the SS209 Valnerina. You can start from different locations on the route (Spoleto, Verchiano, Valico del Soglio, Postignano, Cerreto di Spoleto, Montefiorello, Poggiodomo) and complete the route whenever you wish, within the season.
The initiative is dedicated to the memory of cycling champion Michele Scarponi and focuses on the theme of road safety. It is an experience designed for slow cycle touring, discovering the Valnerina and the villages of the Umbrian Apennines.
For 2026, the Tre Passi Umbri is confirmed as a permanent cycling challenge, available from May 1st to September 30th. The two mixed-terrain routes remain available â the short one of 95 km and the long one of 125 km â through Passo Spina, Passo Gavelli-Capistrello, and Forca di Cerro, with Cerreto di Spoleto and Triponzo among the control points along the route.
The 2026 edition is dedicated to the memory of Michele Scarponi, with a message focused on road safety. Registration is online or at Cicli Scocchetti, and you can complete the route whenever you prefer, within the season.
The Tre Passi Umbri does not have a fixed-time program: it is a challenge that can be ridden freely from May 1st to September 30th, 2026. Participants choose between the short route (95 km) and the long one (125 km) and start from one of the control locations (Spoleto, Verchiano, Valico del Soglio, Postignano, Cerreto di Spoleto, Montefiorello, Poggiodomo). The long route from Spoleto crosses Passo Spina, Verchiano, Valico del Soglio, Postignano, Cerreto di Spoleto, Poggiodomo, Passo Gavelli-Capistrello, and Forca di Cerro before returning. Validation is done by taking selfies at the control points and sending them to the organisation.
The three passes of the Umbrian Apennines (Passo Spina, Gavelli-Capistrello, Forca di Cerro) and the passage through the Valnerina of Cerreto di Spoleto.
Online registration (âŹ21 with travel diary and gadget) or in person at Cicli Scocchetti (âŹ11). After registration, you will receive the personalised diary and your number.
Complete one of the two routes between May and September, photographing the control points for validation.
In case of road works (e.g., between Cerreto di Spoleto and Triponzo), some control points may be temporarily suspended and routes diverted: follow local signage and notices on the official website.
