Running Between Two Countries

Few sporting events tell the spirit of Gorizia like the Trail of the Castle. The race crosses the border between Italy and Slovenia, ideally connecting Gorizia and Nova Gorica, the two cities that today share the title of European Capital of Culture. It is a road and trail running race that starts from the historic center of Gorizia, at the foot of the imposing medieval castle, and then ventures into the woods and monasteries on the Slovenian side.

It is organized by ASD Bike&Run Gorizia, with the patronage of the Municipalities of Gorizia and Nova Gorica. Every year, the Trail attracts several hundred participants, including competitive athletes and walkers, in an atmosphere that blends competition and popular celebration.

A Route Through Parks and Fortresses

The course is a journey into the green and historic heart of the city. From the start in Via Garibaldi, in front of the Verdi Theater, the route touches the ramparts area and the castle park, crosses the Coronini Cronberg park and the Corno Valley, climbs towards the Rafut area, and continues into Slovenian territory, passing through the Kostanjevica monastery and the Panovec forest. An itinerary that alternates urban views, historic parks, and nature, showing the most charming face of this corner of Friuli-Venezia Giulia.

Sport, Solidarity, and Territory

Alongside the competitive race, the Trail of the Castle offers a non-competitive solidarity walk, with shorter routes designed for families and enthusiasts, the proceeds of which support local social initiatives. It is this dual soul, sporting and solidarity-based, that makes the event an eagerly awaited occasion not only for runners but for the entire Isontina community, which gathers every spring to run and walk beyond the border.
