The feast of the patron saint of the throat in the village overlooking Lake Bomba
In the heart of the Abruzzo winter, on February 3rd, the village of Colledimezzo gathers around its patron saint, San Biagio, in one of the most heartfelt and identity-defining celebrations of the local calendar. Nestled on Colle Castellano, between Monte Butino and Monte Rinello, this small municipality in the Province of Chieti overlooks the Sangro Valley and the waters of Lake Bomba: a setting that makes the festival even more evocative, as stone alleys and squares fill with worshippers, market stalls, and the scent of freshly blessed bread.
San Biagio, a hermit and bishop of Armenian origin, is venerated as the protector against throat ailments. Tradition tells that the saint saved a child who was choking on a fish bone: hence his fame as a healer and the famous rite of the anointing of the throat that the faithful receive every February 3rd in the parish church. In Colledimezzo, the blessing takes place in the Church of San Giovanni Apostolo ed Evangelista, the town's main religious building, which houses works attributed to Donato Teodoro and a canvas by Tanzio da Varallo.
The most characteristic moment of the day is the blessing of the bread: the traditional Colledimezzo panettaille, small ritual loaves tied to devotion for the saint. Their blessing is rooted in the local rural culture, where bread is both nourishment and a symbol of protection. Distributed and kept by families, the panettaille represent the deep bond between popular faith and the agricultural memory of the village.
The religious dimension is complemented by the traditional fair, which enlivens the town from the morning with stalls and markets. After the Mass and the procession of the saint through the streets of the center, the community gathers for a convivial three-course lunch, the heart of village social life and an opportunity to rediscover the flavors of Abruzzo cuisine. Music accompanies the day, blending the sacred with popular celebration.
The San Biagio Fair is organized by the Pro Loco of Colledimezzo APS, which is always active in the village calendar with events such as the Chestnut and Wine Festival in autumn and Christmas markets. Visiting Colledimezzo during the festival means stepping into an authentic Abruzzo, made of stone alleys, historic churches, and a slow pace of life, where religious and rural traditions are passed down from generation to generation.
On February 3, 2026, Colledimezzo celebrated its patron saint San Biagio with the traditional feast organized by the Pro Loco. The day began at 8:00 AM with the opening of the fair along the historic center. At 10:00 AM, the blessing of the throat took place in the Church of San Giovanni Apostolo ed Evangelista, followed by Mass at 10:30 AM and the procession of the saint at 11:30 AM. The festival concluded with a convivial three-course lunch in Piazza Vizioli (at the former Elementary Schools on Via Roma in case of rain), accompanied by the blessing of the typical panettaille and music.
Colledimezzo is located in the Province of Chieti, in the Sangro Valley, a short distance from Lake Bomba. By car, it can be reached from the Val di Sangro motorway exit (A14) heading inland, or from the Fondovalle Sangro. The nearest train station is Casoli-Sant'Angelo, served by bus connections.
The festival is held every year on February 3rd, the day of San Biagio. The fair opens in the morning, and religious celebrations take place in the late morning.
