The May fair of artisanal trades in the Salento village of Minervino di Lecce
In the heart of the Adriatic Salento, among ancient olive trees and dry-stone walls, the village of Minervino di Lecce celebrates its Traditional Craft Fair in May. It is one of those village fairs that tells the story of the most authentic Puglia better than any guidebook: not a polished, large-scale event, but a lived-in market rooted in the community calendar, where artisanal trades and the fruits of the land take center stage for an entire day.
Minervino di Lecce is a small town of just over three thousand inhabitants in the province of Lecce, nestled at an altitude of about a hundred meters between the Salento capital and the Adriatic coast. The territory includes the hamlets of Cocumola and Specchia Gallone and guards ancient treasures, such as the famous Dolmen Li Scusi and the evocative underground oil mill carved into the rock. It is a town of light-colored stone, Baroque churches, and noble palaces, where community life still marks the seasons with fairs, festivals, and religious celebrations.
The fair stems from the artisanal vocation of Salento: throughout the day, the streets and squares of the center host exhibitors and artisans who present the best of local production. Among the stalls, you will typically find:
More than just a commercial exhibition, the Craft Fair is a moment of social connection and identity for Minervino di Lecce and the neighboring towns of lower Salento. Strolling through the stalls means rediscovering ancient gestures and knowledge, chatting with those who still work clay or iron, and taking home a truly handmade object. It is the ideal opportunity for those visiting Puglia in May who want to experience a day away from the most crowded tourist circuits, immersed in the authenticity of a Salento village.
The Traditional Craft Fair returned to Minervino di Lecce on Sunday, May 24, 2026, confirming its appointment with the Salento spring. For the entire day, the streets of the center hosted artisans and exhibitors with ceramics, terracotta, textiles, iron and wood work, and typical products from the lower Salento countryside.
As per tradition, the fair combined the market dimension with that of a community festival, attracting visitors from neighboring towns in the province of Lecce. The detailed program, curated by the municipal administration, was not released online in full form.
The fair is held in the historic center of Minervino di Lecce (province of Lecce), among the streets and squares of the town. Admission is free.
By car: Minervino di Lecce can be reached via the SS 275 in the direction of lower Salento; it is about 40 km from Lecce and a few kilometers from the Adriatic coast of Castro and Santa Cesarea Terme. The nearest train stations are those of the Ferrovie del Sud Est in southern Salento, connected to Lecce. The reference airport is Brindisi.
Village fairs come alive especially in the morning and early afternoon: it is advisable to arrive early to find parking in the streets adjacent to the center. Take advantage of the visit to discover the Mother Church, the Dolmen Li Scusi, and the flavors of the local extra virgin olive oil.
