Non-competitive walk and country fair in the Argentario mountains, Fornace
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Tra i Cadini e le Canope is one of the longest-running and most beloved non-competitive walking events in Trentino. Every year, in the heart of summer, the Pian del Gac' in Fornace—a small town on the Argentario plateau in the province of Trento, in the heart of Trentino-Alto Adige—welcomes hundreds of walkers for a day of gentle sport, nature, and conviviality. The event, which reached its 35th edition in 2025, also serves as the Rino Roccabruna Memorial and is a staple of the regional walking calendar.
The walk offers routes of varying lengths—typically 5, 8, and 13 kilometers in recent editions—suitable for families, hikers, and walking enthusiasts. The trails wind through the woods and clearings of Montepiano, with free departure from Pian del Gac' generally between 9:00 AM and 10:00 AM and closing around 1:00 PM, following the arrival of the last participant. Refreshment points and checkpoints are set up along the route in a relaxed, non-competitive atmosphere.
The name of the walk recalls the area's mining history: the cadini and canope are remnants of the intense extraction activity that took place in the Argentario region between the 12th and 16th centuries. Walking along the Montepiano trails, you pass through areas of great natural and historical-cultural value, witnesses to a past when these mountains were marked by mineral excavation and processing. The event thus helps to keep the memory of the local heritage alive.
At the end of the walk, the Pian del Gac' transforms into a large country fair: the Pro Loco and the Gruppo Alpini ANA of Fornace offer traditional Alpine cuisine, local Trentino dishes, games, and social moments for all ages. It is the convivial heart of the day, combining sport with the warm hospitality typical of mountain communities.
Organized by local associations with the support of the Municipality of Fornace, the walk is an event deeply rooted in the life of the Argentario community. Awarded in the past as the best walking event in Trentino, it combines a passion for walking with a love for the local territory, offering residents and visitors a day outdoors amidst nature, history, and tradition.
The 2026 edition of Tra i Cadini e le Canope is expected, as per tradition, in the month of July at Pian del Gac' in Fornace. At the moment, the organizers—Pro Loco and Gruppo Alpini ANA of Fornace—have not yet announced the official date or the route program. The planned format remains the usual one: a non-competitive walk over several distances through the Argentario woods and a country fair with traditional Alpine cuisine. The detailed program will be updated as soon as it becomes available.
