The village in the Tolfa Mountains transforms into a jazz capital, featuring renowned artists and rising young talents.
The Tolfa Jazz Festival was founded in 2010 in Tolfa, a hilltop village in the Tolfa Mountains within the Metropolitan City of Rome, the heart of the Maremma Laziale. Organized by the Tolfa Jazz APS association in collaboration with the Municipality of Tolfa, with the support of the Ministry of Culture and the contribution of the Lazio Region, the festival has grown with each edition to become one of the most anticipated jazz events in Lazio. Since 2024, it has been included among the five Cultural Best Practices of the Lazio Region, a recognition that rewards the quality of the artistic proposal and the ability to enhance the local area.
The format is that of a widespread festival: the main concerts are held at the Villa Comunale Amphitheatre, while the Italo-Norwegian Study Center hosts more intimate projects, and the streets of the historic center fill with street parades and buskers from late afternoon until night. Its roots are firmly planted in the culture of New Orleans and traditional jazz, but over the years, the program has opened up to cross-pollination with electronic music, rap, and new forms of expression.
The seventeenth edition, from July 17 to 19, 2026, is titled "Music, People" and focuses on jazz as a language of connection. Taking the stage at the Amphitheatre will be Frida Bollani Magoni with her "Semplicemente Frida" tour, Davide Shorty with the Nuova Forma Army and his Jazz Rap Revolution Tour, trumpeter Fabrizio Bosso with his Spiritual Trio, violinist Anaïs Drago, the Kolosso, Lucia Filaci & Vittorio Cuculo 5et, Ada Montellanico with her "Radici" project, and trombonist Matteo Paggi, winner of the Top Jazz 2025 award.
A festival within a festival: the Now Generation project, carried out with the support of the Ministry of Culture and SIAE as part of the "Per Chi Crea" program, brings the best under-35 groups from the new Italian jazz scene to the stage every year. This is one of the hallmarks of Tolfa Jazz, which has made discovering young talent its mission.
Alongside the music, the festival offers exhibitions and installations: in 2026, the exhibition "Drawing in the key of jazz" by Germana Galdi and installations by Riccardo Pasquini. Since 2016, Tolfa Jazz has been a partner of Komen Italia: part of the proceeds is donated to the fight against breast cancer, confirming a social vocation that goes beyond the stage.
Tolfa is a medieval village dominated by the Rocca Frangipane, about 60 kilometers from Rome and a stone's throw from Civitavecchia. During the festival, the town experiences its biggest celebration: the squares come alive, the trattorias serve local cuisine, and the audience arrives from all over Lazio to experience three days where, truly, music meets people.
The theme of the seventeenth edition is a statement of intent: jazz as a language of connection, capable of uniting generations and styles. Five main concerts between the Amphitheatre and the Italo-Norwegian Study Center, accompanied by street parades and buskers invading the historic center of Tolfa on Saturday and Sunday evenings starting at 6:00 PM.
Opening the festival on Friday evening is Frida Bollani Magoni with her new tour "Semplicemente Frida", followed by the jazz-rap of Davide Shorty with the Nuova Forma Army. Saturday is the night of the virtuosity of Fabrizio Bosso with his Spiritual Trio, preceded by violinist Anaïs Drago and joined by the Kolosso, with a final DJ set by Aries DJ. Sunday closes with the Lucia Filaci & Vittorio Cuculo 5et, Ada Montellanico with "Radici", and Matteo Paggi, winner of the Top Jazz 2025, with the "Giraffe" project, before the final performance "Yellow Notes".
