Masks, floats, and music by the Tuscia seaside
The Tarquinia Lido Summer Carnival is one of the most original summer events in the Tuscia region: a parade of allegorical floats and costumed groups that doesn't wind through historic streets in February, but rather along the promenade of a seaside resort during the peak of summer. The evenings take place after sunset, as the Lungomare dei Tirreni fills with residents, vacationers, and families: masks, music, lights, and confetti turn the seaside promenade into a true open-air theater.
The event returned to animate Tarquinia Lido in the summer of 2025 after years of absence, thanks to the collaboration between the municipal administration, the Pro Loco Tarquinia, local merchants, and beach resort owners, with the support of the "Troppo Forti" volunteer group. The debut on July 26, 2025, exceeded all expectations: thousands of people followed the parade of six allegorical floats along the route from the Tibidabo to the pine forest, ending with a grand finale in the square in front of the monument.
Building on its success, the 2026 edition doubles up: Saturday, July 25, and Sunday, August 16, both starting at 9:30 PM. The big news is the arrival of monumental air-inflated allegorical sculptures, which can exceed ten meters in height: Tarquinia Lido thus becomes the first Summer Carnival in Italy entirely dedicated to this scenographic technique. The organizers present it as a complementary language—not a replacement—to the historic art of the papier-mâché masters, a heritage of the Italian Carnival.
The Summer Carnival is not just for watching: anyone can join the parade by choosing one of the themed groups. Four groups are planned for 2026—Alice in Wonderland, Aladdin, Superheroes, and Lights and Music—the latter also open to individual costumes. This is the formula that has made the festival a success: residents and tourists are not just spectators, but protagonists of the evening.
The Summer Carnival is part of the rich summer calendar promoted by the Municipality of Tarquinia, in the province of Viterbo, on the northern coast of Lazio. Tarquinia is world-famous for the UNESCO-listed Monterozzi Etruscan necropolis, and its Lido is one of the most popular seaside destinations on the Tuscia coast: the summer masquerade is an extra opportunity to discover this stretch of coast between beaches, pine forests, and ancient history.
The Summer Carnival 2026 animates the Tarquinia Lido promenade with two events: Saturday, July 25, and Sunday, August 16, both starting at 9:30 PM. After the great return in 2025, the 2026 edition raises the bar with a formula unprecedented at the national level: monumental air-inflated allegorical sculptures, mounted on platforms, which can exceed ten meters in height. The organizers — Municipality of Tarquinia, Pro Loco Tarquinia, Gruppo Troppo Forti, SIB Tarquinia, and beach operators — present the novelty as a complementary tribute to the tradition of papier-mâché masters, not a replacement.
The public is invited to parade: four themed groups to sign up for — Alice in Wonderland, Aladdin, Superheroes, and Lights and Music, the latter also open to individual costumes. Music, entertainment, lights, and confetti accompany the two evenings along the Lungomare dei Tirreni. Admission is free.
The subjects of the monumental inflatable sculptures will be unveiled by the organizers shortly before the event.
Tarquinia Lido is located on the coast of the Viterbo province, in northern Lazio. By car: SS1 Aurelia, exit Tarquinia Lido; there is ample parking on the side streets, but it is advisable to arrive early on the evenings of the event. By train: Tarquinia station (Rome–Pisa line), about 3 km from the Lido, connected by local buses. By plane: Rome Fiumicino Airport is about 90 km away.
The event is free and takes place outdoors along the promenade. Those who wish to parade in costume can join the themed groups by contacting the representatives indicated by the organizers on the Pro Loco Tarquinia channels.
The parades begin in the evening (9:30 PM in 2026): bring light clothing but a sweatshirt for the sea breeze. Numerous beach resorts, bars, and restaurants remain open along the route.
