The day when all the bells of Vallarsa ring in celebration
In the heart of Trentino, nestled between the Pasubio massif and the Little Dolomites, Vallarsa preserves a unique tradition: Tintinnabula Vallis Arsiae. Every year on July 15th, at 11:00 AM, all the bells of the churches and chapels scattered across the 42 hamlets of the Vallarsa municipality ring out simultaneously for ten minutes. It is a suspended moment where the entire valley seems to speak with one voice, reminding its inhabitants—and those passing through—of the profound sense of belonging to a community.
The event has its roots in July 15, 1945, when the valley's ecclesiastical and civil authorities signed a solemn act of consecration of the community to the Most Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary at the archpriest church. That gesture, born in the immediate post-war period as a vow of peace and rebirth, is the foundation of Tintinnabula today: the day renews the community pact that has bound the people of Vallarsa for over eighty years.
The simultaneous tolling of the valley's bells is a rare sonic heritage. The bell towers of Vallarsa, scattered among woods and slopes, create a choral concert that resonates from hamlet to hamlet along the valley floor. It is not just a religious call; it is the tangible sign of the unity of a community dispersed across many small villages, which for a moment recognize themselves as part of a single fabric.
In the afternoon, the valley sets out on a journey. Itinerant processions depart from the numerous hamlets at staggered times, moving from churches and chapels to converge on the hamlet of Raossi, the municipal seat and center of Vallarsa. A return shuttle service is available for those who wish to use it. At 6:00 PM, Holy Mass is celebrated, followed by a community dinner: a convivial moment that closes the day in a spirit of sharing.
Located in the province of Trento, in the Trentino-Alto Adige region, Vallarsa is a valley deeply marked by the history of the Great War and mountain life. Hiking trails, via ferratas, ethnographic museums, and an intact alpine landscape make it an ideal destination for those seeking authenticity. Tintinnabula Vallis Arsiae is the perfect opportunity to discover this territory on its most defining day, when the sound of the bells tells the soul of the valley better than any words.
On Wednesday, July 15, 2026, Vallarsa renews its most heartfelt tradition. The rhythm of the day remains faithful to the ritual: at 11:00 AM, the festive ringing of all the valley's bells for ten minutes; in the afternoon, itinerant processions from the hamlets towards Raossi (with the possibility of returning by bus); and at 6:00 PM, Holy Mass followed by the community dinner. The event is organized by the Municipality of Vallarsa together with the pastoral unit and the valley's associations.
Vallarsa can be reached by car from Rovereto (take the Rovereto Sud exit on the A22 Brenner motorway), driving up the valley towards Raossi. The nearest train station is in Rovereto, on the Verona-Brenner line.
