The classical music festival set within the Baroque palaces of Ala
Ala City of Music is a classical music festival that transforms the village of Ala, in the province of Trento, into an open-air musical laboratory every summer. Established in 2016 and reaching its 11th edition in 2026, the festival is promoted by the I Virtuosi Italiani orchestra in close collaboration with the Municipality of Ala. It runs throughout the month of July, offering a blend of evening concerts, artist meet-and-greets, and advanced training activities.
The uniqueness of the event lies in its venues: concerts are hosted in the courtyards and salons of the Baroque palaces in the historic center, which stand as a testament to the era when Ala was famous throughout Europe for its velvet production. Palazzo Taddei, Palazzo Pizzini—which also houses the Antique Piano Museum—and Palazzo Scherer provide acoustic and scenic settings of rare charm, where the audience can enjoy the music just steps away from the performers.
The program alternates between major symphonic and chamber music events and moments dedicated to younger generations. Alongside the main concerts featuring I Virtuosi Italiani and renowned soloists, the festival offers an intensive educational program: masterclasses and workshops for violin, trumpet, and harp, the Music Summer Camp, and the Giovani Promesse project, which brings students from advanced courses onto the stage for public concerts. This educational focus makes Ala City of Music not just a festival, but a place where new generations of musicians are nurtured and grow.
Nestled in the Vallagarina valley, between Rovereto and Lake Garda, the festival has become one of the premier musical events of the summer in Trentino-Alto Adige. The intimate setting of the palaces, accessible ticket prices, and the high quality of the artistic offerings make it an ideal experience for classical music lovers and those wishing to discover the historical heritage of Ala in a unique way.
From July 10 to 29, 2026, the eleventh edition of the festival promoted by I Virtuosi Italiani and the Municipality of Ala returns to Ala. The calendar opens on July 10 in the Palazzo Taddei Courtyard with "The Magic of Italian Virtuosity," an inaugural concert featuring violinist Ulisse Mazzon with music by Mozart and Rossini.
Highlights include: the Chopin recital by young pianist Martina Meola (July 18, Palazzo Pizzini), the Concert for Peace on July 24 with Paolo Pollastri on oboe d'amore and Alberto Martini on violin (music by Arvo Pärt, Telemann, Bach, and Pachelbel), the recital by bassoonist Paolo Carlini (July 28) featuring works by Vivaldi and Albinoni, and the concerts of the Giovani Promesse project and the Music Summer Camp.
Ala is served by the Ala-Avio motorway exit on the A22 Brenner motorway and by the Ala railway station on the Verona-Brenner line. The palaces hosting the concerts are located in the historic center, which is easily accessible on foot.
Main concerts: €10 full price, €5 reduced. Giovani Promesse and Music Summer Camp concerts: €5. Tickets are available online via the Vivaticket network and at the organization's box office.
