About Blessing of the Fields

The Third Millennium Blessing of the Fields is a spring tradition that draws pilgrims, farmers, and visitors to the countryside of Castiglione di Sicilia, nestled at the foot of Mount Etna along the Alcantara Valley. Set against the evocative backdrop of the Byzantine Cuba of Santa Domenica—one of Sicily's most fascinating national monuments—this event revives the ancient local farming tradition of blessing the fields. The day features a Eucharistic celebration, a solemn blessing ceremony, and a rustic feast showcasing typical products from the Etna region. This initiative, organized by the Archeoclub and the local parish in collaboration with FAI, beautifully weaves together faith, history, landscape, and rural identity.

An ancient rite at the foot of Mount Etna

The Third Millennium Blessing of the Fields is one of the most heartfelt and defining events in Castiglione di Sicilia, a village in the Province of Catania perched between the northern slopes of Mount Etna and the Alcantara River valley. Every spring, typically in May, the community gathers in the Castiglione countryside to renew the ancient rite of blessing the fields—a gesture rooted in the local agricultural tradition that carries profound symbolic and community value today.

The setting: the Byzantine Cuba of Santa Domenica

The heart of the event is the Byzantine Cuba of Santa Domenica, a small rural church nestled in the countryside near the Alcantara River, with Mount Etna as its backdrop. Declared a national monument in 1909, the Cuba is one of the most captivating examples of Sicilian medieval architecture. Long attributed to the Byzantines, scholars now place its origins between the Islamic and Norman periods. Its three-nave layout with a transept and semicircular apse, along with its lost frescoes, make it a place steeped in history and spirituality—the ideal setting for a rite that connects the heavens, the earth, and the labor of the fields.

The day's program

The event unfolds over a morning that combines culture, faith, and conviviality:

  • Meeting point and cultural walk through the historic center of Castiglione with guides from FAI (National Trust for Italy)
  • Pilgrim gathering at the Byzantine Cuba
  • Eucharistic celebration presided over by the parish archpriest
  • Blessing of the fields according to the ancient Castiglione rite
  • Rustic feast in the square in front of the Cuba, featuring moments of conviviality and tastings of local products

Flavors of the Etna region

The rustic feast that concludes the morning is also an opportunity to discover the authentic flavors of the area: Etna and Alcantara wines, olive oil, cheeses, honey, and local agricultural produce, all fruits of an extraordinarily fertile volcanic land. The tasting thus becomes an integral part of the rite's meaning—a gesture of gratitude and a wish for a bountiful harvest.

An event promoted by the community

The Third Millennium Blessing of the Fields is organized by Archeoclub d'Italia and the Santi Apostoli Pietro e Paolo Parish, with the patronage of the Municipality of Castiglione di Sicilia and the collaboration of FAI. It is an appointment that enhances the historical-artistic heritage, religious tradition, and rural identity of one of Sicily's most evocative villages, officially recognized as one of the "Borghi più belli d'Italia" (Most Beautiful Villages in Italy).

Blessing of the Fields — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Third Millennium Blessing of the Fields is expected, as per tradition, in May at the Byzantine Cuba of Santa Domenica in Castiglione di Sicilia. As of now, the official dates and program for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced by the organizers. As every year, the event is expected to include a cultural walk through the village, a Eucharistic celebration, the blessing of the fields according to the ancient Castiglione rite, and a rustic feast with tastings of typical Etna products.

The 2026 Third Millennium Blessing of the Fields is expected to return, as is tradition, in May in the countryside of Castiglione di Sicilia, in front of the Byzantine Cuba of Santa Domenica. The official dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced: the program will presumably follow the usual format, with the FAI walk in the historic center, the Eucharistic celebration, the field blessing rite, and the rustic feast with local products. We invite you to check for updates on the official channels of the Municipality and the Parish as the event approaches.
