An ancient devotion in the heart of Castello

The Feast of Maria SS. della Catena is one of the most deeply rooted religious celebrations in Fiumefreddo di Sicilia, a town in the Province of Catania overlooking the Ionian coast, at the northeastern foot of Mount Etna and just a few kilometers from Taormina. The festival traditionally takes place in the Castello district, the ancient core of the town with medieval origins, which still preserves the memory of the tower and the fiefdom from which Fiumefreddo originated before becoming an autonomous municipality.

The heart of the celebrations is the Parrocchia Maria SS. del Rosario di Castello, whose church was inaugurated in 1969 and houses the statue of the Madonna della Catena, an object of profound devotion by the residents of the district and the entire community.

When it takes place

The event is scheduled for the first Sunday of September, a time when the district comes alive with faithful, visitors, and vacationers taking advantage of the tail end of the Sicilian summer. The festival day is preceded by an intense preparatory period.

The novena and preparation

In the days leading up to the feast day, the novena is held—nine days of spiritual preparation marked by daily religious services, the recitation of the Holy Rosary, and Eucharistic celebrations. Among the most touching moments is the children's floral tribute to the Madonna, a simple and evocative gesture that involves the families of the district.

The day of the feast

On the Sunday before the solemn day, the festive sound of bells and the first fireworks announce the imminence of the feast. On the main day, the noon fireworks display captures the attention of the entire town. In the afternoon, a solemn Mass is celebrated, followed by the procession: the statue of the Madonna della Catena, placed on an artistic float, is carried on shoulders through the decorated streets of the district, amidst prayers, hymns, and the moving participation of the devotees, until the traditional return to the church.

Tradition, flavors, and community

As with many Sicilian patronal feasts, the religious dimension intertwines with the popular one: during the festival days, the district fills with food stalls featuring local products, above all the famous grilled sausage sandwich, as well as musical entertainment and performances in the square. The Feast of Maria SS. della Catena thus represents an opportunity for the community of Fiumefreddo to meet, where faith, neighborhood identity, and conviviality merge into one of the most cherished traditions of Ionian Sicily.
