Devotion, procession, and the Seasoned Bread Festival in the Ponte Borea district
The Feast of Maria SS. delle Grazie is one of the most anticipated events of the summer in Fiumefreddo di Sicilia, a coastal town in the Metropolitan City of Catania overlooking the Ionian Sea, on the border with the province of Messina. This recurrence is particularly dear to the Ponte Borea district, which experiences it every year with great participation, transforming its streets into a path of light, faith, and celebration.
The festivities open with a three-day preparation period that draws numerous devotees to the district church. The first Sunday of July is the culmination: two Holy Masses are celebrated, one in the morning and one in the late afternoon. Afterward, the wooden statue of the Madonna delle Grazie emerges from the church, greeted by the emotion of the faithful, and travels in procession through streets decorated with lights and flags, returning to the church in the evening. The day traditionally concludes with a fireworks display that illuminates the sky over Ponte Borea.
Beyond its religious dimension, the festival is famous for the Bread Festival, one of the most beloved gastronomic traditions of the district. During the evenings, the Festival Committee hosts the seasoned bread festival—a typical local product—engaging the community's youth in entertainment and performances. It is an opportunity for neighbors to gather, enjoy freshly baked bread, and experience the conviviality that has always characterized Sicilian neighborhood festivals.
The Feast of Maria SS. delle Grazie is part of the rich calendar of religious festivals and food fairs that animate the summer in Fiumefreddo, from late June to September. Between faith, folklore, and gastronomy, the event represents an authentic slice of the popular traditions of the Ionian Sicily, where Marian devotion intertwines with the flavors of the land and a sense of belonging to the Ponte Borea community.
The Feast of Maria SS. delle Grazie returns to the Ponte Borea district of Fiumefreddo di Sicilia on July 1, 2, and 3, 2026. As per tradition, the program includes the preparation triduum, Eucharistic celebrations, the procession of the Madonna's wooden statue amidst lights and flags, and the concluding fireworks display.
The evenings will also feature the Seasoned Bread Festival, involving the local youth with food, music, and entertainment. The detailed program with times and events will be released by the Festival Committee in the days leading up to the feast.
