The road race through the hills of Montaldo Bormida, Trisobbio, and Carpeneto
The Three Castles Route - Don Bisio Memorial is one of the most beloved running events in the Alto Monferrato. It takes place in Montaldo Bormida, a small town in the Province of Alessandria, in south-eastern Piedmont, attracting competitive runners and enthusiasts from across the region and nearby Liguria every year.
The name of the race reflects its spirit: a loop that touches the three hilltop villages of Montaldo Bormida, Trisobbio, and Carpeneto, each crowned by its own historic castle. The approximately 12-kilometer course is varied and undulating, featuring climbs and descents that test the legs while offering stunning views of the vineyards and hills of Monferrato, a landscape recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The race is dedicated to the memory of Don Bisio, a figure deeply connected to the local community. The Memorial thus holds an emotional value that goes beyond the competition, keeping the town's traditions alive. The race is fueled by the enthusiasm of volunteers, cheering crowds along the route, and the convivial atmosphere typical of Piedmontese village events.
The event is organized by A.S.D. Verdenero Castellazzo Bormida, a local running club, in collaboration with the Municipality of Montaldo Bormida and the commitment of the "runner" mayor, Emiliano Marengo. The race is included in the regional FIDAL Piedmont calendar and is open to both registered athletes of all categories (cadets, students, juniors, promises, seniors, and masters) and Runcard holders.
Traditionally scheduled for March, the Three Castles Route effectively kicks off the spring running season in the Alessandria area. Recent editions have seen excellent participation, with over a hundred ranked runners and a strong presence from local clubs such as Atletica Novese, Atletica Ovadese, and Frecce Bianche. For those who love running immersed in the hilly landscape of Monferrato, it is a classic event not to be missed.

Vincitori assoluti 2026:
Montaldo Bormida is located in the Province of Alessandria, in the Alto Monferrato. By car, it can be reached via the A26 motorway (Ovada exit) or the A21, continuing on provincial roads towards Carpeneto and Trisobbio. The nearest train stations are in Ovada or Acqui Terme.
The race is competitive, included in the FIDAL Piedmont calendar, and open to registered athletes and Runcard holders. For registration, fees, and race rules, it is recommended to consult the organizer, A.S.D. Verdenero Castellazzo Bormida, and the Bio Correndo portal, where entry lists and rankings are published.
The course is hilly and undulating: we recommend a good warm-up and shoes suitable for asphalt and varied terrain. Spring weather can be unpredictable, so dressing in layers is advised.
