Ancient rituals, nature, and music in the village of Montone
The Magical Night of Saint John is an event held in the village of Montone, a small hamlet in the municipality of Mosciano Sant'Angelo, in the province of Teramo, in the heart of the Teramo region of Abruzzo. Every year, coinciding with the summer solstice and the feast of Saint John the Baptist, the medieval village comes alive for an evening suspended between rural tradition, popular spirituality, and live music. The event is organized by the Pro Loco Montone APS, which has successfully highlighted the intimate and evocative atmosphere of the historic center.
The heart of the evening is the Saint John's Water Ritual, a symbolic gesture of good luck deeply rooted in Abruzzo culture. Participants are invited to gather wild herbs and flowers to prepare scented water to take home as a symbol of prosperity, well-being, and renewal. The tradition recalls the ancient custom of the 'dew of Saint John': the dew that falls on the night between June 23rd and 24th was considered beneficial and purifying, capable of protecting the body and ensuring a good harvest. Traditional plants of the Teramo area include St. John's wort, elderflowers, mallow, wormwood, and mint, which were used to make decoctions and infusions.
As evening falls, the village of Montone transforms into an enchanted setting: the streets and corners of the town light up to host the Classic Candle Experience concert, an evocative musical event designed to enhance the magic of the shortest night of the year. The music envelops the audience in an intimate and refined atmosphere, in perfect harmony with the historical backdrop of the small village.
The Magical Night of Saint John is part of the rich summer calendar of Mosciano Sant'Angelo, a program of events that enlivens the territory from June to September across hamlets, squares, and villages. The Montone event stands out for its strong bond with the roots of the Abruzzo region and its ability to combine popular memory with contemporary cultural offerings, providing visitors with an authentic and engaging experience.
For the 2026 edition, the village of Montone hosted the Magical Night of Saint John on June 23rd and 24th.
