A free-entry Christmas village within the walls of a seaside castle
Every winter, from December 8th to Epiphany, the Castle of Santa Severa โ a 14th-century fortress overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea, in the village of Santa Severa in the municipality of Santa Marinella, near Rome โ transforms into one of the most evocative Christmas villages in the Lazio region. The Magic of Christmas is a free-entry event promoted by the Lazio Region and organized by LAZIOcrea, in collaboration with the Municipality of Santa Marinella. Themed lights, sparkling Christmas trees, music, and shows bring the Spianata dei Signori and the castle courtyards to life, with the winter sea as a scenic backdrop.
The heart of the event is the village set up on the Spianata dei Signori, open daily with free access. Main attractions include:
The calendar accompanies the public from the Immaculate Conception to the Befana: Santa Claus walks through the village to meet children, polyphonic choirs perform on weekends, and the schedule is filled with magic shows, street artists, circus acts, fire performances, giant soap bubbles, bagpipers, and puppet theater. There are also meetings with authors under the tree and an immersive theatrical experience inspired by the Harry Potter universe. The grand finale is entrusted to the Befana, the star of the first days of January leading up to the Befana Circus on Epiphany.
The event is designed primarily for families: creative workshops, outdoor games, mascots, and entertainers keep the little ones busy, while adults can take the opportunity to visit the Castle Museum and the Museum of the Sea and Ancient Navigation, or enjoy a walk on the winter beach at the foot of the fortress.
The first Christmas village at the castle dates back to the winter of 2018-2019, and by its second edition, the initiative had already exceeded twenty thousand visitors. Year after year, the event โ also known in the past as the "Christmas Village" โ has grown to become one of the most popular Christmas destinations on the Lazio coast, attracting visitors from Rome, Civitavecchia, and the entire province.
Few settings in Italy allow you to experience the Christmas atmosphere among the towers of a medieval castle overlooking the sea. Free admission, easy access by train, and a varied program make it an ideal day trip during the Christmas holidays.
Promoted by the Lazio Region and organized by LAZIOcrea, the 2025-2026 edition opened on December 8th with mass in the church of Maria Assunta and concerts by the Polyphonic Choir of Bracciano. For a month, the Santa Marinella castle offered a packed calendar with free admission: ice skating, a vintage carousel, an artistic nativity scene by the Italian Association of Nativity Scene Friends, a market of local products and crafts, "Books under the tree" author meetings, magic shows by Mago Mikele, bagpipers, circus and fire games, giant soap bubbles, luminous aerial acrobatics, and puppet theater. On December 14th and January 4th, actor Stefano Dragone played Albus Dumbledore in the immersive "Welcome to Hogwarts" experience, while from January 3rd to 6th, the Befana greeted the public until the grand finale with the Befana Circus.
