The village of Morra De Sanctis transforms into a Christmas wonderland filled with markets, bagpipes, and baccalà alla ualanegna.

The Magic and Flavors of Christmas is the holiday event of Morra De Sanctis, a small town in the Province of Avellino, Campania, nestled in the hills of Alta Irpinia. For an entire weekend in December, the historic center changes its face: lights illuminate the alleys, the houses and cellars open their doors to exhibitors, and the square becomes the stage for a celebration that blends tradition, culture, gastronomy, and entertainment.
The initiative is promoted by the Pro Loco Morra De Sanctis together with the Municipality of Morra De Sanctis and local associations. It was born in December 2024 and has quickly become one of the most anticipated events in the Irpinian winter calendar, capable of attracting families and visitors from neighboring towns and bringing life back to the village in the days leading up to Christmas.
The heart of the event is the Christmas market: small wooden houses and stalls arranged along the route of the historic center, featuring gift ideas, decorations, local handicrafts, and regional gastronomic specialties. Alongside the exhibitors, there are workshops for children and Santa's House with its elves, set up in the rooms of the Castello Biondi Morra, the manor that overlooks the town and becomes an exceptional scenic backdrop on festive evenings.
The gastronomic aspect is one of the main reasons to travel to Morra. The stalls offer dishes that tell the story of the village's peasant heritage:
The live program draws heavily from the traditional repertoire: zampogna and ciaramella (bagpipes and shawms) accompanying the novena, tarantella and folk music groups, but also street performances with jugglers and stilt walkers, screenings for children, and evenings animated by local bands and DJ sets. There are also guided tours of the historic center, an opportunity to discover the history of a town rebuilt after the 1980 Irpinia earthquake and linked to the name of Francesco De Sanctis, the great literary critic and minister of post-unification Italy who was born here and whose birthplace can be visited today.
The Magic and Flavors of Christmas is the classic village festival that works precisely because it remains authentic: no artificial scenery, just a real village that lights up, cooks, and plays music. For those visiting inland Campania in winter, it is also an opportunity to combine the event with an itinerary in Alta Irpinia, among castles, rebuilt villages, wineries, and high-altitude dairy production. The format is two days, Saturday and Sunday, on the weekend preceding Christmas.
At the moment, no official announcement has been published for a new edition of The Magic and Flavors of Christmas in Morra De Sanctis, in the Province of Avellino. The first two editions were held in December 2024 and December 2025, always over two days on the weekend preceding Christmas, with markets, food and craft stalls, folk music, and Santa's House at the Castello Biondi Morra.
We do not publish dates or programs until the official communication from the Pro Loco Morra De Sanctis and the Municipality arrives. Those wishing to plan their visit can consult the Pro Loco website or its Facebook page, where the announcement with the poster is usually released between late November and the first days of December.
By car: from the A16 Naples-Canosa motorway, take the Lacedonia or Grottaminarda exit, then follow provincial roads towards Morra De Sanctis (Alta Irpinia). The Lioni-Grottaminarda junction (SS 7 var/A) is the most convenient route from Avellino. By train: Grottaminarda-Ariano Irpino or Avellino station, then Air Campania bus lines. Nearest airport: Naples Capodichino, about a 2-hour drive away.
The historic center is largely pedestrianized during the event: parking is available in designated areas near the town, and you can continue on foot along the market route.
Access to the village and markets is free: you only pay for what you consume at the food stalls. In some editions, the Pro Loco has added a prize lottery to the event with tickets supporting the festival.
You are at high altitude in the Irpinian Apennines: it gets cold in December, so comfortable shoes and heavy clothing are essential because the alleys are steep and partially paved. For accommodation, it is best to look in Lioni, Sant'Angelo dei Lombardi, and Nusco, all just a few kilometers away.
