The Living Mysteries of Cavola

A tradition of the Reggio Emilia Apennines

The Living Mysteries of Cavola are a sacred representation that is renewed every year on the evening of August 5th in Cavola, a hamlet of the Municipality of Toano, in the Province of Reggio Emilia, in the heart of the Reggio Emilia Apennines. The event is linked to the feast of the Madonna della Neve (Our Lady of the Snows), a celebration that the liturgical calendar marks on August 5th, and takes place along the path leading from the village to the Oratory of the Madonna della Neve, an ancient sanctuary that overlooks the village of Cavola from above.

How the evening of August 5th unfolds

At dusk, a procession with the image of the Madonna departs from the Sanctuary, accompanied by faithful carrying torches. Along the route back to the village, the procession stops in front of a series of living tableaux that suddenly light up at the sides of the path, surprising the viewer and immersing them in the narrative. This is the format of ancient sacred representations, revived in a processional and itinerant manner.

The scenes and the participants

The protagonists are the young people of the valley, who embody episodes from the Old and New Testaments. Depending on the theme chosen for the year, the tableaux can vary from 8 to 12 and involve a considerable number of participants, up to 100-150 people from the entire community. The scenes are mostly static, true tableaux vivants, but some include movements and spoken parts by the performers. There are also local devotional songs that accompany the evening, contributing to a special atmosphere where the religious aspect intertwines with a strong cultural identity.

The Sanctuary of the Madonna della Neve

The Oratory stands on a hilly plateau overlooking Cavola. Devotion to Santa Maria ad Nives (Our Lady of the Snows) in this place has been documented for centuries and is linked to the path of the chapels of the Mysteries of the Rosary that characterize the sanctuary. The feast of August 5th represents the most anticipated moment of the summer for the community of Cavola, attracting visitors from all over the Reggio Emilia mountains and neighboring municipalities.
