About Bormida Chestnut Festival

In October, Bormida, a small mountain village in the upper Bormida Valley, celebrates autumn with 'La Castagnata'. In the square of the Chiesa hamlet, steaming roasted chestnuts, chestnuts with cream, mulled wine, fritters, and typical sweets warm up a day of celebration dedicated to the fruit symbol of the season. Organised by the Pro Loco and recognised as an Authentic Ligurian Event 2026, the chestnut festival is a traditional event that draws visitors from the Savona hinterland, in a genuine mountain atmosphere.

The chestnut festival in Bormida

La Castagnata is the autumn festival of Bormida, a small mountain municipality in the upper Bormida Valley in the province of Savona. Nestled among the hinterland woods, Bormida celebrates in October the fruit that has marked the history of mountain communities: the chestnut, a precious resource for local food and economy for centuries.

Roasted chestnuts, cream, and mulled wine

The festival takes place in the square of the Chiesa hamlet, the heart of the village, where the stands of the Pro Loco Bormida offer steaming roasted chestnuts, original chestnuts served with cream, mulled wine to warm up, fritters, and typical sweets, including Fazzini specialities. A triumph of autumn flavours in a warm festive atmosphere.

An Authentic Ligurian Event

The event is included among the Authentic Ligurian Events 2026, the programme with which the Liguria Region supports traditional and identity-based festivals of the territory. The recognition enhances La Castagnata as an authentic expression of mountain peasant culture and as an opportunity to promote the Savona hinterland.

Bormida and the upper Bormida Valley

A popular holiday destination for its nature and tranquility, Bormida is one of the small gems of the upper Bormida Valley. La Castagnata is the ideal occasion to discover this mountain village and its authentic flavours, on an autumn day filled with woods, traditions, and conviviality.
