Renaissance historical re-enactment in the village of Bagno di Romagna
Every summer, the historic center of Bagno di Romagna, in the province of Forlì-Cesena, transforms into an open-air set in the Renaissance. The Captain's Days are a historical re-enactment that revives a tradition deeply linked to the identity of this corner of the Tuscan-Romagnol Apennines: the period when the Medici family annually sent a trusted man to the so-called Val di Bagno to "captain" the entire territory on behalf of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany.
Bagno di Romagna was a borderland under Florentine rule for a long time: the Grand Duchy of Tuscany governed this territory until 1923, and evidence of this remains today in the historic Palazzo del Capitano on Via Fiorentina. The event meticulously reconstructs the customs of the late fifteenth century, ideally taking the village back to the Year of Our Lord 1485: residents and participants wear period costumes, shops and squares fill with colors, scents, and sounds of yesteryear, while the arrival and installation of the new Captain become the narrative thread of the entire festival.
During the re-enactment days, the village comes alive with a rich and varied program:
Alongside the performances, gastronomy plays a leading role: in past editions, the festival has featured a Renaissance gastronomic walk involving the village's restaurants, with dishes inspired by court cuisine and local wines. It's an opportunity to discover the flavors of the Tuscan-Romagnol Apennines in a unique setting.
The Captain's Days are much more than a simple village festival: they are an event of identity that tells five centuries of history of the relationship between the Bagno Valley and Florence. Organized by the Pro Loco of Bagno di Romagna with the patronage of the Municipality, the re-enactment is free and suitable for the whole family, and fits perfectly into a holiday among the thermal baths, forests, and villages of the upper Savio Valley, in Emilia-Romagna.
The historical re-enactment returns to Bagno di Romagna (FC) from July 30 to August 2, 2026, confirming the summer event that brings the village back to the era of Medici rule over the Bagno Valley. As tradition dictates, the historic center will host costume parades, the medieval market, groups of flag-throwers and musicians, theatrical performances in the scenic Piazza Ricasoli, and the Captain's oath ceremony.
Currently, the organization, managed by the Pro Loco of Bagno di Romagna, has confirmed the dates, but the detailed program is still under development: times, performances, and guest groups will be announced in the weeks preceding the event on the official local tourism channels. The event remains free admission.
The dates for the 2026 edition (July 30 - August 2) are confirmed, but the detailed program is under development and will be published by the organization in the weeks preceding the event.
Based on past editions, the re-enactment typically spans several days with historical costume parades, a medieval market along the village streets, performances by flag-throwers and musicians, Renaissance dances, theatrical and street performances in Piazza Ricasoli, weapon games, a costumed mass, and concluding with the solemn oath of the Captain and fireworks. The final program with times and guests will be available on the official Bagno di Romagna tourism website.
The event animates the historic center of Bagno di Romagna (FC), with its heart in Piazza Ricasoli, Piazza Dante, Via Fiorentina, and the village streets, around the historic Palazzo del Capitano.
By car: from Cesena, take the E45 towards Rome, exit Bagno di Romagna; the village is located in the upper Savio Valley, in the Tuscan-Romagnol Apennines. By train: nearest station is Cesena, then continue by bus or car.
