Tibetan monks and the sand mandala in Alta Valsassina
Il Respiro della Valle is a holistic festival held in Casargo, in Alta Valsassina, in the Province of Lecco. After many years, the event brings Tibetan monks back to the valley, welcomed in the municipal civic hall for a new edition dedicated to spirituality, peace, and contemplation.
The heart of the event is the creation of the sand mandala, one of the oldest and most sacred art forms of Tibetan Buddhism. For several days, from Saturday to Monday, the monks work live on this composition of extraordinary precision, which visitors can observe as it takes shape grain by grain. An experience of rare intensity, capable of conveying the sense of patience and dedication of the Tibetan monastic tradition.
Alongside the mandala, the event features a market of handmade objects and the ritual of lucky bracelets, tied by the monks to visitors' wrists. The most symbolic moment is the destruction of the mandala at the end of the event: a ceremony that, by dismantling the just-completed artwork, reminds everyone of the impermanence of things and the flow of life.
With free admission, Il Respiro della Valle offers a precious opportunity in Casargo to encounter Tibetan Buddhist culture, in a highly evocative mountain setting. The event combines spiritual dimension, art, and social interaction, confirming itself as one of the most unique appointments in the cultural calendar of Valsassina and the Lecco area.
The 2026 edition of Il Respiro della Valle takes place in Casargo from May 30 to June 2, in the municipal civic hall. After many years, Tibetan monks return to Valsassina to dedicate themselves, from Saturday to Monday, to the creation of a sand mandala for world peace.
Visitors can attend the creation process for free, visit the artisan market, and receive lucky bracelets tied to their wrists by the monks. As in all editions, the event concludes with the destruction of the mandala, a ceremony symbolizing the impermanence of things.
