A race in the heart of Tuscany
The Terre di Siena Ultramarathon is one of the most beloved running events in central Italy: an ultramarathon that turns the hills of the Siena province in Tuscany into a vast, open-air stage. Organized by the UISP Siena Territorial Committee APS, the race combines sport, scenery, and culture, passing through some of the most beautiful and famous villages in the region, many of which are UNESCO World Heritage sites.
Three starts, one finish: Piazza del Campo
The formula is now a trademark: three competitive routes with different starting points but a single, breathtaking finish line. The premier 50 km race kicks off from San Gimignano, the famous city of towers; the 32 km route starts from Colle di Val d'Elsa; and the 18 km race begins in Monteriggioni, the fortified village immortalized by Dante. All athletes converge on Piazza del Campo in Siena, one of the world's most famous squares and home to the annual Palio horse race. Crossing the finish line in the shadow of the Torre del Mangia is an unforgettable experience.
White roads and the Via Francigena
The charm of the Terre di Siena Ultramarathon lies in its trails. Runners tackle the iconic Sienese strade bianche—unpaved roads immersed in vineyards, cypress trees, and clay hills—and traverse sections of the ancient Via Francigena, the historic pilgrimage route. It is a journey through the quintessential Tuscan landscape, the very same that hosts the international Strade Bianche cycling race just days later.
An international and charitable event
Over the years, the event has grown to attract thousands of participants from numerous nations, with a strong female presence and hundreds of registered teams. Alongside the competitive races, there are non-competitive distances open to everyone, designed to involve families and walkers. The race also has a charitable heart, supporting causes such as pediatric cancer research.
More than a race: a celebration for the city
The Terre di Siena Ultramarathon is the highlight of a wider week dedicated to sports in the municipality of Siena. For an entire day, the historic center comes alive with athletes, supporters, and spectators, while the towns of San Gimignano, Colle di Val d'Elsa, Monteriggioni, and Siena collaborate to welcome the caravan along the route. It is the perfect opportunity to discover the Sienese province, combining a passion for running with the pleasure of a territory rich in history, art, and fine food.
Terre di Siena Ultramarathon — edition 2026
The 11th edition of the Terre di Siena Ultramarathon was held on Sunday, March 1, 2026, with side events starting as early as Saturday. Organized by the UISP Siena Territorial Committee APS, it recorded high international participation, with athletes from 17 nations and a significant number of female participants.
The three competitive routes returned to their original paths: 50 km starting from San Gimignano, 32 km from Colle di Val d'Elsa, and 18 km from Monteriggioni, all finishing in Piazza del Campo in Siena, along the white roads and sections of the Via Francigena. The event, part of the Siena Sport Experience preceding the Strade Bianche, also reaffirmed its commitment to charity.

Sunday, March 1, 2026 — Starts
- 09:00 — 50 km competitive race, start from San Gimignano (16-hour time limit)
- 09:30 — 32 km competitive race, start from Colle di Val d'Elsa (11-hour time limit)
- 10:00 — 18 km competitive and non-competitive race, start from Monteriggioni (3-hour time limit)
- 10:00 — 6 km non-competitive Nordic walking and fitwalking, start from Piazza del Campo, Siena
Finish
All routes converge in Piazza del Campo in Siena, at the foot of the Torre del Mangia.
The trails cross the hills and villages of the Sienese province along white roads and sections of the Via Francigena. The event counted approximately 2,000 participants (about 1,600 in the competitive races) and hundreds of registered teams.

How to get there
Siena can be reached by car via the Florence-Siena highway (Siena exit) or the Via Cassia. By train, you arrive at the Siena station, which is connected to Florence and Empoli; from the station, the historic center and Piazza del Campo can be reached by city bus or on foot. The nearest airport is Florence-Peretola.

The starting points are located in San Gimignano (50 km), Colle di Val d'Elsa (32 km), and Monteriggioni (18 km), with a common finish in Piazza del Campo in Siena.
