Drama, music, and dance at the historic Massa theatre, celebrating 140 years in 2026
The Teatro Guglielmi is the main theatre in the municipality of Massa, the capital of the Province of Massa-Carrara, located in the heart of northern Tuscany between the Apuan Alps and the Tyrrhenian Sea. Inaugurated on April 25, 1886, with Gaetano Donizetti's Maria di Rohan, it has been a landmark for audiences from the Apuan Riviera and the Lunigiana region for over a century. Overlooking Piazza del Teatro in the city's historic centre, it hosts a rich annual season of drama, music, and dance.
The 2025-2026 Theatre Season, organized by the Municipality of Massa in collaboration with the Fondazione Toscana Spettacolo onlus, runs from October 2025 to May 2026 and offers 25 productions for a total of 50 performances spanning drama, music, and dance. The programme alternates between great contemporary and classical drama, ballet, and concerts, designed for both loyal subscribers and occasional theatre-goers.
The season brings together some of the most recognizable faces in Italian theatre and cinema. Announced protagonists include Claudio Bisio, Paola Minaccioni, Luca Marinelli, Vanessa Scalera, Gabriele Lavia, Massimiliano Gallo, Vinicio Marchioni, Vittoria Belvedere, Paolo Calabresi, Valeria Solarino, Caterina Murino, Leo Gassmann, Massimo Dapporto, Anna Ferzetti, and Giacomo Giorgio. Alongside major drama titles, the programme includes dance performances such as Swan Lake and Wonderboys, and music concerts ranging from chamber repertoire to beloved classics.
The highlight of the edition is the theatre's 140th anniversary: from March 23 to May 20, 2026, a special season of events, exhibitions, meetings, and educational activities will celebrate the long history of the Guglielmi. The climax is expected on Saturday, April 25, 2026, the symbolic date of the inauguration, when the theatre returns to the great operatic tradition with Giuseppe Verdi's La Traviata, directed by Andrea Bernard. Celebrations continue with the international dance gala Le Ali della Danza, dialect plays, concerts by the Liceo Musicale, and free workshops at La Bottega delle Arti.
More than just a programme, the Guglielmi Season represents a cultural cornerstone for the entire Apuan area: a high-quality offering that brings the best of the national theatre scene to Massa, taking on even greater symbolic value for the city and Tuscany during this 140th-anniversary year.
The 2026 portion of the Teatro Guglielmi Season in Massa kicks off in January with a top-tier drama programme, before bursting into celebrations for the theatre's 140th anniversary (March 23 - May 20, 2026). The symbolic day is Saturday, April 25, when the Guglielmi returns to opera with Verdi's La Traviata, exactly 140 years after its 1886 inauguration.
Organized by the Municipality of Massa with the Fondazione Toscana Spettacolo onlus, the season confirms the theatre's role as the main cultural hub of the Province of Massa-Carrara and the entire Apuan Riviera.
Alongside the performances, the 140th-anniversary programme includes exhibitions spread between the theatre and the State Archives, concerts by the "F. Palma" Music High School, guided theatre tours, and free workshops at La Bottega delle Arti.
