Bringing great jazz to Piazza Municipio since 1993, always with free admission
The Teano Jazz Festival is one of the longest-running jazz events in Southern Italy. The first edition dates back to 1993, and the festival has continued uninterrupted ever since, celebrating over three decades of programming in 2026. It is organized by the cultural association Teano Musica e oltre APS, which brings internationally renowned musicians and new voices of Italian jazz to the town of Teano, in the province of Caserta, every summer. It is a rare example of a research-focused festival that has thrived far from major cities, deep in the Campanian hinterland.
For many years, concerts were held on the historic balcony of the Teanum Sidicinum Archaeological Museum, a charming but necessarily intimate setting. More recently, the festival moved to the town center, taking over Piazza Municipio. This decision changed the face of the event, transforming it from a niche gathering for enthusiasts into a true town festival, capable of attracting hundreds of people from across the Alto Casertano area. The square, with the historic center's buildings serving as a backdrop, has proven to be the perfect natural acoustic setting for summer evenings.
The lineup typically alternates between a major name from the global scene, an original Italian project, and an evening dedicated to emerging artists. Recent years have seen performances by Mexican drummer Antonio Sánchez, long-time collaborator of Pat Metheny and composer of the Birdman soundtrack; the duo formed by pianist Rita Marcotulli and percussionist Israel Varela with their tribute to Pino Daniele; singer Karima with the Amedeo Ariano Trio; and pianist Sergio Cammariere with his quintet. The programming blends contemporary jazz, singer-songwriter music, and Latin American and Mediterranean influences.
Since 2024, the festival has complemented its main lineup with the Teano Jazz Contest, a national competition for emerging musicians. Applications open in the spring; a pre-selection process identifies five or six finalists who perform live on the festival's opening night before an audience and a jury of professionals, chaired by maestro Pietro Condorelli and including maestros Leonardo De Lorenzo and Giulio Martino. The top three finishers receive prizes and promotional opportunities; the 2025 winner, the Straight Jazz Quartet, returned to Teano the following year to present their debut album.
One of the festival's defining features is that it is free: all concerts have free entry, with no advance tickets or reservations required, subject to square capacity. The organizers maintain this policy as an antidote to the elitist perception that long accompanied jazz, and it has successfully broadened the audience to include families, young people, and curious locals.
Teano Jazz is not limited to July evenings. The festival also marks April 30th, International Jazz Day, with concerts dedicated to emerging projects, and continues in winter with Teano Jazz Winter, hosted at the Teatro Diocesano «Mons. Tommasiello». This year-round activity has allowed the association to build a loyal community of listeners, rather than just a summer event.
Teano is a town in the Alto Casertano area, in the interior of Campania, at the foot of Mount Roccamonfina. The ancient Teanum Sidicinum preserves an important archaeological heritage, housed in the local Archaeological Museum, and is linked to Italy's Risorgimento history. Visitors to the festival will find a compact historic center, easy to explore on foot before the concerts, and a local Campanian gastronomic tradition featuring inland products—from meats to local cheeses—offered by the town's businesses during the festival evenings.
Three consecutive evenings, from July 10th to 12th, 2026, all in Piazza Municipio and all with free admission: this was the formula used by the Teano Musica e oltre APS association to celebrate the festival's thirty-third year in Teano, in the province of Caserta.
The lineup was announced in the spring and brought together the two souls of the festival: on one hand, the discovery of new talent with the third edition of the Teano Jazz Contest, and on the other, big names from the international scene, including Antonio Sánchez's quintet and the Rita Marcotulli - Israel Varela duo. Local reports described a crowded square, with hundreds of enthusiasts arriving from across the Alto Casertano region.
The year's program did not end in July: on April 30th, for International Jazz Day, the festival had already presented the Straight Jazz Quartet—winner of the 2025 contest—and the Gennaro Desiderio Quintet, while the winter appointment at the Teatro Diocesano «Mons. Tommasiello» is scheduled for December.
