About Tavolata di San Giuseppe

In Aidone, nestled in the heart of inland Sicily in the province of Enna, the Tavolata di San Giuseppe is one of the most cherished events of the year. Organized by the Pro Loco Aidone-Morgantina, it features a grand votive table laden with blessed bread, traditional pasta, and rustic local dishes, set up to commemorate the ancient custom of preparing a sacred meal for those in need. It is a gesture of faith, sharing, and solidarity that renews a deeply rooted local tradition every year.

The Tavolata di San Giuseppe in Aidone

In the small village of Aidone, perched on the Erei Mountains in the province of Enna, the feast of Saint Joseph marks the first major celebration of the year. Alongside the novenas and solemn masses in the small church dedicated to the Holy Patriarch, the foster father of Jesus, the most anticipated moment is the Tavolata di San Giuseppe: a grand, lavishly decorated table prepared each year by the Pro Loco Aidone-Morgantina at the Factory Rocca di Cerere Geopark.

An ancient Sicilian tradition

The tavolate, or "Saint Joseph's tables," are altars overflowing with food that were once set up in private homes as ex-votos for a received grace. They were occasions for collaboration and solidarity among neighbors and friends, but above all, for generosity toward the poor, who were the intended recipients of most of the displayed dishes. In Aidone, during the Wednesdays of March, smaller versions known as virginedd' were also prepared, with three or six guests representing the Holy Family.

Having become increasingly rare due to high costs and the significant effort required, these tables have found new life thanks to the work of associations, the local Pro Loco, schools, and parishes, which have revived one of the most defining traditions of the Aidone community.

The table and its flavors

The grand community table is dominated by blessed bread, shaped according to traditional Sicilian designs, and traditional pasta prepared for the occasion. Surrounding these symbolic dishes are other rustic Sicilian specialties, in a display that blends culinary art, bread-making craft, and an authentic community spirit.

Faith and solidarity

The profound meaning of the Tavolata remains true to its origins: after the blessing, the collective tasting of the bread and displayed food begins, with special attention reserved for the needy, ensuring that this act of faith continues to be a concrete sign of solidarity. It is an event that draws both Aidone residents and visitors every year, weaving together religious devotion, popular culture, and hospitality in the center of Sicily.

Tavolata di San Giuseppe — edition 2026

The 18th edition of the Tavolata di San Giuseppe took place in Aidone between March 15 and 19, 2026, organized by the Pro Loco Aidone-Morgantina. The tasting of the grand community table was held at noon at the Factory Rocca di Cerere Geopark, following the blessing of the bread and dishes, as part of the religious celebrations for the Holy Patriarch.

The 18th edition

For 2026, the Pro Loco Aidone-Morgantina renewed the 18th edition of the city's Tavolata di San Giuseppe, set up at the Factory Rocca di Cerere Geopark. On Sunday, March 15, after the blessing officiated by Father Carmelo Cosenza, the tasting of the traditional pasta, blessed bread, and all the items displayed on the grand table took place at 12:00 PM.

Religious celebrations accompanied the event with the novena and daily mass at 5:30 PM in the Church of San Giuseppe from March 10 to 19, culminating on March 19, the Saint's day, with masses at 9:30 AM, 11:30 AM, and 6:30 PM. For this edition as well, special attention was paid to those in need, in the spirit of solidarity that has always characterized the Aidone tradition.
