Music, spirituality, and world cultures on the church square of the Mother Church
On June 21st, the day of the summer solstice, the Music Festival (Festa della Musica) is celebrated throughout Europe, a massive widespread event that fills squares, churchyards, and streets with sounds and free concerts. For the first time, this festival with a universal vocation also arrives in Surano, a small town in the province of Lecce, in the heart of Salento, thanks to the efforts of the Pro Loco of Surano APS, in collaboration with the Maria SS. Assunta Parish and the Municipality of Surano.
The initiative was created to offer the community a moment of meeting and sharing, valuing music as a tool capable of uniting peoples, traditions, and emotions. The chosen setting is the church square of the Mother Church, one of the most evocative corners of the historic center of Surano, where sacred architecture dialogues with the landscape of lower Salento.
The heart of the evening is the musical performance "Ave Maria from all over the world", an artistic project created by Antonio Papa. The audience is taken on an intense and multicultural musical journey, through interpretations coming from different traditions and artistic sensibilities. On stage, voice, violin, piano, saxophone, and percussion intertwine for a journey capable of uniting spirituality, art, and different cultures in a single shared emotion.
Located in the hinterland of lower Salento, in the province of Lecce and the Apulia region, Surano is a small community that proudly preserves its traditions. With the Music Festival, the town joins the widespread calendar promoted at a national level by UNPLI and the Italian Pro Loco associations, bringing the spirit of June 21st here as well: a free festival, open to everyone, which transforms the everyday spaces of the village into places of listening and community.
On Sunday, June 21, 2026, Surano celebrated the Music Festival for the first time, the great European event of the summer solstice. On the evocative square of the Mother Church Maria SS. Assunta, starting at 8:30 PM, the community gathered for an evening dedicated to culture, sharing, and music as a universal language.
At 8:40 PM, the show "Ave Maria from all over the world" was performed, an artistic project created by Antonio Papa. The audience was taken on an intense and multicultural musical journey, with interpretations from different traditions, weaving together voice, violin, piano, saxophone, and percussion. The event was organized by the Pro Loco of Surano APS in collaboration with the Parish and the Municipality of Surano, in the province of Lecce.
Surano is located in lower Salento, in the province of Lecce. By car, it can be reached from the SS 275 road in the direction of Maglie-Santa Maria di Leuca, taking the exit towards the towns of the Salento hinterland. The reference railway station is Maglie, on the Ferrovie del Sud Est network; the nearest airports are Brindisi-Papola Casale and Bari-Palese.
The event is held on the square of the Mother Church starting at 8:30 PM, with the main show starting around 8:40 PM. Admission is free.
As this is an evening outdoor event, it is advisable to arrive a little early to find a seat on the square. In the surrounding area, you can combine visits to the villages of lower Salento and the marinas of Santa Maria di Leuca.
