Live music and food stalls in the alleys of this Sannio village

Suoni e Sapori is the most anticipated summer event in Sassinoro, a small town in the Province of Benevento, Campania. As evening falls, the village lights up and its historic center becomes an open-air stage, where local culinary traditions and live melodies intertwine in an atmosphere described by locals as truly unique. The event is traditionally held on August 12th, in the height of the Sannio summer, drawing residents, expats returning for the holidays, and visitors from neighboring towns.
The heart of the event is the gastronomic trail that winds through the characteristic streets and alleys of the historic center. The stalls offer authentic local flavors, with traditional dishes carefully prepared according to home recipes: a simple and engaging concept that turns an evening stroll through the village into a widespread tasting experience. The public moves from one station to another, pausing at doorways and in small squares, discovering the town through its food.
Alongside the food and wine trail, local artists and musicians bring the evening to life with live performances scattered throughout the village streets. Rather than a single concert on a large stage, music is diffused across various corners of the village: as you walk, you move from one atmosphere to another, blending listening with tasting. This is the hallmark of the event, which clearly declares its dual soul—sounds and flavors—in its very name.
With just over six hundred inhabitants and a territory of about thirteen square kilometers, Sassinoro is one of the smallest municipalities in the Province of Benevento. It sits at an altitude of about 545 meters in the Alto Tammaro area, bordering Morcone for most of its perimeter, while facing Molise to the north toward Sepino. The Tammaro River brushes the southern boundary of the municipal territory, which is locally known as the "town of water" due to the abundance of its springs. The Sanctuary of Santa Lucia, built in the 20th century in Neo-Romanesque style, is the town's other defining landmark.
Suoni e Sapori is organized by the Pro Loco of Sassinoro, with the involvement of the municipal administration, the youth forum, and other local associations. It is a grassroots event, built on the volunteer work of dozens of people who set up stalls, cook, and welcome visitors. In 2025, the evening was enriched by an exhibition dedicated to the history of emigration from Sassinoro, set up along the gastronomic route: a theme that, here as in many inland villages of Campania, touches almost every family.
The festival is not an isolated event but the highlight of the municipality's summer program, which traditionally hosts other initiatives dedicated to music, gastronomy, and the promotion of local water resources throughout August and September. Those planning a stay in the area can combine the evening of August 12th with other village events and explore the Matese and northern Sannio regions.
The event takes place entirely outdoors in the historic center: comfortable shoes are recommended, as the village is characterized by alleys, steps, and slopes. As it is a mid-August evening event, it is advisable to arrive a little early to find parking at the edges of the village and enjoy the entire route at a leisurely pace.
As of the writing of this page, no official information has been published regarding the 2026 edition of Suoni e Sapori in Sassinoro, in the Province of Benevento. The event, promoted by the Pro Loco in conjunction with the municipal administration, is a well-established fixture of the village's summer calendar, traditionally held in mid-August.
The format repeated in recent editions includes the evening opening of food stalls along the streets and alleys of the historic center, featuring local traditional dishes, and live performances by local artists and musicians scattered along the route. The public moves on foot from one station to another, in an itinerary that combines tasting and music.
The dates and program for the 2026 edition will be released through the channels of the Pro Loco Sassinoro and the Municipality, along with the village's summer program. Those planning a visit can check for updates in the weeks leading up to mid-August.
