The Calascibetta theatre season curated by Latitudini
In Calascibetta, a charming village perched at over 900 metres in the heart of the Enna province, Sicily, the Sulla Vetta - High-Altitude Theatre festival has become a highly anticipated fixture of the winter and spring season. Hosted at the Teatro Comunale Contoli Di Dio, the festival is organised by Latitudini, the Sicilian dramaturgy network that has been promoting the island's new theatrical scene for years, with the support of the Municipality of Calascibetta and the Regional Department of Tourism, Sport and Entertainment.
The programme offers a balance between contemporary drama, classic reinterpretations, and musical theatre, showcasing companies and artists from the Sicilian territory. Each season features a series of evening performances, accompanied by a Sunday section designed for families and children, with titles that blend fairy tales, music, and puppet theatre.
The festival pays special attention to families, with Sunday afternoon events designed to introduce children to the language of theatre. Alongside the traditional programme, the special Demetriadi project takes performances out of the theatre and into the evocative archaeological sites of Calascibetta, such as the Byzantine village and the Via Carcere caves, enhancing the village's historical heritage through open-air theatre.
Overlooking nearby Enna, Calascibetta dominates a landscape of ridges and plateaus that give the festival its name: a theatre literally "at high altitude". The initiative represents an important cultural hub for the Sicilian hinterland, helping to bring high-quality theatrical offerings to small towns that would otherwise be concentrated only in large cities. The festival is aimed at both local audiences and visitors who wish to discover inland Sicily by combining culture, tradition, and live performance.
The fifth edition of the Sulla Vetta - High-Altitude Theatre festival brought the Teatro Comunale Contoli Di Dio in Calascibetta to life from January to May 2026, with a programme curated by Latitudini.
Evening performances kicked off on 29 January with Col sudore della fronte by Ivan Bertolami, followed by Sulle orme di Gaspara Stampa (7 February), AgamennoMan by Collettivo V.A.N. The Sunday section for families featured Il Principe Felice (25 January), Una missione per Gufetta (15 February), Lino e Lone (8 March), and Cuori Sioux (12 April). To close the season, the Demetriadi project brought theatre to the archaeological sites of Calascibetta between May and June.
