About Strolling from San Pietro to San Raffaele

For two evenings in mid-July, the historic centre of Sala Consilina, in the heart of the Vallo di Diano, transforms into an open-air stage. "Strolling from San Pietro to San Raffaele" guides the audience through the narrow alleys of the ancient village, from the church of San Pietro Apostolo to the chapel of San Raffaele, featuring street theatre, acrobatics, live music, exhibitions in noble palace courtyards, and traditional dishes prepared by local women.

A stroll that becomes a show

"Strolling from San Pietro to San Raffaele" is the summer event that brings the ancient village of Sala Consilina back to life. Located in the Vallo di Diano, in the province of Salerno, Campania, it is the most populous town in the valley. Rather than a festival confined to a single square, it is a journey—a slow walk starting from the church of San Pietro Apostolo and winding up through the historic centre to the chapel of San Raffaele, encountering artists, musicians, exhibitions, and traditional food stalls along the way.

The route: churches, noble palaces, and alleys

The path traverses the oldest part of the town, climbing the slope at the foot of the mountain. The stops along the walk are also historical landmarks of the village:

  • the church of San Pietro Apostolo, the starting point of the itinerary;
  • the Acciari chapel, where restoration works have been showcased to the public in recent years;
  • the noble palaces of the village, including Palazzo Vesci and the Del Vecchio residence, whose courtyards host photography and craft exhibitions;
  • the church of Santa Sofia;
  • the chapel of San Raffaele, which marks the end of the walk.

Each point along the route offers something different—a concert, a performance, an exhibition, or a tasting—so that the stroll transforms into a shared cultural event that is never the same twice.

Street arts, circus, and live music

The spectacular part of the event focuses on the evening hours, when the historic centre lights up. The programme combines street theatre, acrobatics and contemporary circus, roving brass bands, and live concerts: formulas designed for audiences of all ages, who move on foot from one stop to the next following the music. Companies perform either in a roving format or at fixed stations along the route, with shows repeated over the evenings so no one misses out.

Local cuisine, the heart of the festival

Alongside the performances, "Strolling" has always been a culinary journey. In the alleys and small squares of the village, traditional local dishes are prepared with local ingredients: ruospi, fusilli with ragù, cavati with beans, roasted caciocavallo impiccato, grilled sausage, pizza, roasted corn, homemade desserts, and zeppole, all accompanied by local wine. The cooking is largely done by the women of the village, and it is this collective effort that makes the event a true community celebration rather than just a simple list of performances.

Exhibitions, artisans, and local memory

The route regularly hosts a photography exhibition dedicated to local families, which reconstructs the social history of the village through images, alongside displays by artisans and artists from the Vallo di Diano. In past editions, the streets were decorated with crochet work made by local women, a detail that perfectly captures the participatory spirit of the initiative. Palazzo Vesci has also hosted Neapolitan classical music concerts, balancing the liveliness of the street with a more intimate moment.

Organisers

The event is promoted by the Allegracore Cultural Association, led by Domenico Santini, in collaboration with the Municipality of Sala Consilina, the San Pietro parish, and other local associations. The event is part of the Estate Salese programme, the municipal summer schedule that brings shows, historical re-enactments, cinema, sports, and environmental initiatives to the town from July to September.

Why it's worth the trip

Sala Consilina is the natural gateway to the Vallo di Diano, just a few kilometres from the Certosa di Padula and the Grotte di Pertosa-Auletta. "Strolling from San Pietro to San Raffaele" is the best opportunity to see its historic village not as a backdrop, but as a living space: illuminated, traversed, cooked in, and told by its inhabitants over two July evenings.
