The eco-friendly walk through the hamlets of Teggiano, in the Vallo di Diano
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Strateggiano is one of the longest-running and most beloved events in Teggiano, a medieval village perched in the heart of the Vallo di Diano, in the province of Salerno, in Campania. Born in the early nineties on the initiative of the Pro Loco Teggiano, this eco-friendly walk has spanned over three decades of the town's life: in 2025, it reached its thirtieth edition, following the forced hiatus during the pandemic years and the restart in 2023. The name itself is a play on words between «strada» (road) and «Teggiano», perfectly capturing the concept: walking along the roads, mule tracks, and paths of the municipality to rediscover its landscape at a slow pace.
The meeting point for participants is traditionally set in the Pantano hamlet, from where the group sets off in the morning for a loop of about six kilometers, designed to be accessible to everyone: no technical difficulties, gentle elevation changes, and a relaxed pace. The route winds through the countryside and districts of the municipal territory, which includes the hamlets of Pantano, Piedimonte, Macchiaroli, Prato Perillo, San Marco, and Facofano. It is not the same walk every year: the route is adapted from edition to edition. In 2023, for example, the San Marco area was excluded from the itinerary due to health restrictions related to African swine fever, which affected wooded areas and their surroundings.
Strateggiano is a non-competitive march: there are no rankings or times to beat. Upon registration, each participant receives a bib, a cap, and a sticker for the event, and upon returning to Pantano, the awards ceremony takes place, involving all walkers. This is a deliberate choice by the organizers, who over the years have built the event's identity around three words: sport, nature, and socialization. This is why the walk attracts families, groups of friends, school groups from the Vallo di Diano, and curious visitors every year, with a reduced registration fee specifically designed for students.
Beyond the sporting aspect, Strateggiano was born as an ecological awareness initiative: walking along the paths, observing the fields, olive groves, and streams of the Vallo di Diano up close helps people appreciate the value of a natural heritage that is often taken for granted. Teggiano is part of the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park, a protected area recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the event is effectively a simple and popular way to share its landscape with the inhabitants even before the visitors.
Those arriving from outside would do well to dedicate the afternoon to the historic center of Teggiano, one of the best-preserved villages in inland Campania. Perched at over 600 meters above sea level on a hill overlooking the entire Vallo di Diano plain, it retains its medieval layout with the Castello Macchiaroli, the Cathedral of Santa Maria Maggiore, and a dense network of alleys, churches, and noble palaces. A few kilometers away is the monumental Certosa di San Lorenzo di Padula, also inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list.
The event is promoted by the Pro Loco Teggiano, a volunteer association active since 1982 and chaired by Biagio Matera, in collaboration with the Municipality of Teggiano, local associations, the municipal police, and law enforcement, with the support of local businesses. The same Pro Loco is also the creator of «Alla Tavola della Principessa Costanza», the great 15th-century historical re-enactment that transforms the village every August and represents the other signature event of Teggiano.
Strateggiano is usually held on a Sunday in early June: the thirtieth edition took place on Sunday, June 1st, 2025. The dates for subsequent editions are communicated by the Pro Loco in the preceding weeks through the official website and the association's social media channels.
After reaching the milestone of the thirtieth edition in 2025, Strateggiano remains one of the fixed appointments on the calendar of Teggiano, in the Vallo di Diano. As of the update of this entry, however, the Pro Loco has not yet made public the date of the 2026 edition or the corresponding route.
Based on previous editions, it is reasonable to expect the usual format: early morning meeting in the Pantano hamlet, registration with the delivery of a bib, cap, and sticker, group departure, and return in the mid-morning for the awards ceremony, on a non-competitive route of about 6 kilometers suitable for everyone. None of these elements are confirmed for 2026, however, and the route may change from year to year.
To get confirmed dates, fees, and a detailed program, it is advisable to contact the Pro Loco Teggiano directly (Piazza San Cono, phone +39 0975 79600, [email protected]) or consult the association's Facebook and Instagram pages.
Teggiano is located in the Vallo di Diano, in the province of Salerno. By car, take the Sala Consilina or Padula-Buonabitacolo exit from the A2 del Mediterraneo motorway (formerly A3 Salerno-Reggio Calabria), then continue for a few kilometers on local roads. The nearest train station is Sapri, connected by bus lines to the Vallo di Diano; the reference airports are Naples Capodichino and Salerno Costa d'Amalfi.
The traditional starting point is the Pantano hamlet of Teggiano, where registrations take place early in the morning and where participants return at the end of the walk for the awards ceremony.
Registrations are collected on the morning of the event on-site. For information: Pro Loco Teggiano, Piazza San Cono, 84039 Teggiano (SA) — phone +39 0975 79600, e-mail [email protected], website www.prolocoteggiano.it and Facebook and Instagram pages «prolocoteggianoeventi».
