About Stramurales

Stramurales is the international street art festival that, since 2018, has transformed Stornara—a small town in the province of Foggia, Puglia—into one of Italy's most mural-dense villages. Organized by the Stornara Life APS association, every summer it brings artists from all over the world—Europe, North and South America, China, Australia—to create large-scale murals on public and private facades. Today, the town boasts over 150 murals and an open-air museum recognized even at an international academic level.

Stramurales, the open-air museum of Stornara

Stramurales is the international street art festival that has made Stornara, a town of just under 6,000 inhabitants in the province of Foggia, Puglia, one of the Italian capitals of urban art. Launched in 2018 by the social promotion association Stornara Life APS, the project has gradually covered the facades of the historic center with large mural works, turning the town's streets into a widespread, permanent gallery that can be visited for free at any time of the year.

A project born in 2018

The underlying idea is simple yet ambitious: invite some of the world's most acclaimed street artists to Stornara and entrust them with the town's walls, both public and private, to transform them into canvases. Edition after edition, the number of murals has grown to exceed 150 works, creating a true open-air museum that has reversed the trend of depopulation typical of small villages in the Capitanata hinterland.

Artists from all over the world

Over the years, Stramurales has hosted creators from various Italian regions as well as numerous European countries, North and South America, China, and even Australia. Each edition often revolves around a theme—among the most well-known are Desperate World and Freedom—which artists reinterpret freely with their own language, giving Stornara's walls an extraordinary variety of styles, from figurative muralism to large abstract fields.

A model recognized internationally

The so-called Stornara model has crossed national borders: the festival has been featured by international media and has gained the attention of the academic world. The Harvard Health and Human Rights Journal dedicated a study to it titled Street Art as Public Health Infrastructure, which analyzes how participatory street art contributes to community well-being, reducing environmental stress and strengthening social ties. The project has also equipped itself with a street art infopoint, featuring digital totems that allow for a virtual tour of the town's murals.

The future of the festival

Following the funding difficulties that emerged in the autumn of 2025, the future of Stramurales remains open: the Stornara Life APS association has continued its activities—from attending the BIT in Milan to workshops with the Academy of Fine Arts and local schools—while the dates for a potential 2026 edition have not yet been announced. The heritage of murals, however, remains visitable all year round, free of charge, by walking through the streets of Stornara.

Stramurales — edition 2026

At the moment, the dates for the 2026 edition of Stramurales have not yet been announced. Following the funding difficulties that emerged in the autumn of 2025, the future of the Stornara street art festival remains uncertain, while the Stornara Life APS association continues its cultural activities. The murals created in previous editions remain freely visitable all year round.

The dates for the 2026 edition of Stramurales have not yet been made official. Following the funding difficulties that emerged in the autumn of 2025, the organization led by Stornara Life APS has not confirmed a new summer event in Stornara, in the province of Foggia. We recommend checking for updates on the association's official channels. In the meantime, the open-air museum with over 150 murals remains freely visitable at any time of the year.
