The race that ignites Orvieto's identity
The Staffetta dei Quartieri is much more than a running race: it's the moment when Orvieto rediscovers its neighborhood soul, the division into Quarters that marks the city's life and its affectionate rivalries. Every year, in June, Piazza del Duomo becomes the pulsating heart of an evening of sport and celebration that precedes and prepares for the city's major festivities.
The four Quarters in competition
The four historic Quarters compete, each with its own colors: Corsica (yellow-red), Stella (yellow-blue), Olmo (white-green), and Serancia (white-red). The main event involves 11 athletes per Quarter over 10 legs (one mixed), along a circuit of about 950 meters that goes from Piazza del Duomo through via Soliana, via Cesare Nebbia, corso Cavour, the Torre del Moro, and via del Duomo.
A celebration for all ages
The evening opens with youth relays — from the youngest up to middle schoolers — involving over 350 young athletes, before moving on to the main challenge between the Quarters. In Piazza del Duomo, a big screen and live streaming on the Municipality's official channels allow everyone to follow the race. The event is organized by the Municipality of Orvieto (Province of Terni) with Atletica Libertas Orvieto, and also awards the best overall male athlete, the master category, and the best female athlete.
Staffetta dei Quartieri — edition 2026
The 59th edition of the Staffetta dei Quartieri is scheduled for Saturday, June 6, 2026, in Piazza del Duomo in Orvieto. The evening, organized by the Municipality with Atletica Libertas Orvieto, opens with youth relays — from children under 6 up to middle schoolers — involving over 350 young athletes, culminating in the main event between the four Quarters (Corsica, Olmo, Stella, Serancia). New features include daytime heats with Local Police escort to ensure safety. Awards for the best overall athlete, master category, and best female athlete.

- Children's relay (up to 11 years old)

- Late evening — Main relay between the four Quarters (11 athletes per Quarter, 10 legs including one mixed, ~950m course)
