Spring Marathon

A tradition spanning over thirty-five years

The Spring Marathon is one of the most beloved events on the calendar in Cassino, located in the heart of the Frosinone province in Southern Lazio. Organized by CUS Cassino (University Sports Centre) and led by Carmine Calce, the event reached its 36th edition in 2026, cementing itself as a collective ritual that brings thousands of citizens together every April 25th. This is not a competitive race, but a non-competitive fun run open to anyone who wishes to participate on foot, by bicycle, or in a wheelchair, with no age restrictions.

The route: six kilometers through the city center

The course, approximately six kilometers long, winds through the main streets of Cassino, starting from Corso della Repubblica. The historic route passes through Via Secondino Pagano, Via XX Settembre, Via degli Abruzzi, the area near the local prison, Via San Pasquale, and Via Lungofiume Madonna di Loreto, before returning to finish at the entrance of the Villa Comunale. The return to the Villa Comunale, after several years away from its traditional home, made the recent edition a true homecoming for the event.

In the name of peace

The guiding theme of the Spring Marathon is captured in five words: Peace, Family, School, Church, and Associations. The event promotes values of integration, brotherhood, and solidarity, involving local schools, parishes, and community groups. It is no coincidence that bib number 1 is traditionally entrusted to the Abbot of Montecassino, who opens the march with a message of hope: «Let peace flourish».

A celebration for the whole family

The race is accompanied by a day of festivities at the Villa Comunale, featuring sports demonstrations and activities for all ages: performances of tai chi chuan, karate, fencing, fitness, and dance take place on stage, while younger attendees can enjoy inflatables, a traditional puppet theater, and other attractions. Participation is free and open to all, in an atmosphere of togetherness that makes this one of the most popular events in the entire municipality of Cassino.

A city marked by history and dominated by the famous Abbey of Montecassino, Cassino experiences a strong sense of community identity through the Spring Marathon. The event is supported by the Lazio Region, the Municipality of Cassino, the University of Cassino and Southern Lazio, and the Province of Frosinone, reflecting its deep roots in the local social and institutional fabric.
