A spring festival in the heart of the Alta Valle Bormida

Spring in Squaneto is the event that celebrates the arrival of the beautiful season in the hamlet of Squaneto, the largest village in the municipality of Spigno Monferrato, in the province of Alessandria, on the edge of Piedmont bordering Liguria. Organized by the Pro Loco of Spigno Monferrato, it is a genuine village festival, far from the crowds of large events, and for this very reason, it offers an authentic glimpse into the life of a rural community in the Alta Valle Bormida.

Nature, wild herbs, and landscapes

The heart of the day is a nature walk along the paths and hills surrounding Squaneto, a territory of woods, vineyards, and ancient landmarks such as the Romanesque bridge of San Rocco and the Church of the Immaculate Conception, which houses the famous white marble Madonna of Squaneto. During the walk, a guide helps participants identify wild herbs, in an experience that combines local knowledge with a direct connection to nature as it awakens in spring.

The festival is also a time for shared remembrance: the community of Squaneto and Spigno Monferrato gathers to honor those who are no longer with us and to reaffirm their sense of belonging. The Pro Loco's 'merenda sinoira'

Following the Piedmontese tradition, the day concludes with a merenda sinoira prepared by the Pro Loco in the square: a convivial meal, halfway between a late afternoon snack and dinner, featuring cured meats, cheeses, frittatas, savory pies, and the simple flavors of local peasant cuisine. It is the moment when the community sits down together, toasts to spring, and extends the festivities into the late afternoon.
