The annual spring concert of the Laion brass band, the highlight of their musical year
The Frühjahrskonzert (spring concert) of the Musikkapelle Lajen is the most anticipated event in the musical calendar of the band from Laion (known as Lajen in German), a picturesque mountain village overlooking Val Gardena, in the province of Bolzano, within the Trentino-Alto Adige region. Every spring, the musicians take the stage at the village Kulturhaus to offer the community and guests what the organizers themselves call "the highlight of the musical year."
The Musikkapelle Lajen was founded in 1824 and has been an active part of village life for two centuries. In 2024, the association solemnly celebrated its bicentenary with a full year of festivities, culminating in a grand Jubiläumsfest in a marquee. Like all bands in South Tyrol, the Musikkapelle accompanies processions, religious festivals, and civil ceremonies, but it is during the spring concert that they truly shine, presenting the results of months of rehearsals to the public. The association's president (Obmann) is Michael Grünberger.
The Frühjahrskonzert features a repertoire designed to surprise and engage: the program transitions from traditional brass music of the great Tyrolean band school to Latin American sounds, from a refined clarinet quartet solo to modern concert wind music. It is a musical journey that showcases the band's various sections and highlights the artistic growth of the younger musicians trained within the village's own ranks.
Laion/Lajen is a Dolomitendorf, a village at the foot of the Dolomites, nestled on a sunny terrace at the entrance to Val Gardena. Linked to the figure of the famous medieval poet Walther von der Vogelweide, the village maintains a strong German and Ladin identity and an intense community life, of which the brass band is a cornerstone. The spring concert is not only an artistic event but also a moment of community gathering.
The 2026 edition of the Musikkapelle Lajen's Frühjahrskonzert was held over two dates, March 22 and 23, 2026, at the cultural hall (Kulturhaus) of Laion/Lajen, in the province of Bolzano. Following the bicentenary celebrations of the association (founded in 1824), the band chose to present the concert in a double performance to allow a wider audience to participate in the highlight of the musical year.
The program offered a diverse and curated journey: traditional brass music from the Tyrolean band school, Latin American sounds, a refined clarinet quartet solo, and pieces of modern wind music. A gala evening that confirmed the artistic vitality of the village band and its strong bond with the Laion community.
Laion/Lajen is located at the entrance to Val Gardena, in the province of Bolzano. By car, it can be reached via the A22 Brenner motorway (exit Chiusa/Klausen or Bolzano Nord), then following the road that climbs toward the plateau. The nearest train station is Chiusa/Klausen, which is connected to the village by local buses. The nearest airports are Bolzano, Innsbruck, and Verona.
The spring concert is held at the Kulturhaus in Laion. It typically begins in the evening; for specific times, reservations, and seat availability, please check the band's official channels.
