The open-air carnival in the 'bear village' of Val di Non
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Spormaggiore Carnival is one of the most cherished folk festivals on the Paganella Plateau, in the heart of Val di Non. Every winter, the town's Piazza Fiera fills with costumes, colors, and music for a day dedicated to family fun and the entire community of Spormaggiore, in the province of Trento (Trentino-Alto Adige).
The heart and soul of the festival is the Zusi group, which has been animating the Spormaggiore carnival for many years. In the days leading up to the event, the Zusi go from house to house collecting donations to fund the great feast in the square, a tradition that brings the whole town together. The organization is managed by the Carnival Committee, supported by the Pro Loco, the Alpine Group, the Fire Brigade, the Parish, AVIS, and the municipal administration.
For years, the program has followed a well-loved and time-tested structure:
Spormaggiore is known as the bear village: a large part of its territory lies within the Adamello-Brenta Nature Park, and just a short walk from the center is the Wildlife Park, where you can observe brown bears, wolves, lynxes, and other Alpine animals. The local specialty is the tortel di patate (potato pancake), served with cured meats, cheese, beans, and sauerkraut. Attending the Carnival is therefore a perfect opportunity to discover an authentic village in Val di Non, blending folk tradition with nature.
The Spormaggiore Carnival will return in 2026: the Pro Loco has already set up the page for this edition, a sign of the continuity of this popular Val di Non festival. The exact 2026 dates have not yet been announced, and the detailed program will be communicated by the organizers in the weeks prior. As every year, we look forward to the celebration in Piazza Fiera with the children's costume parade, the Zusi's macaroni, polenta with luganega sausages, and entertainment for the little ones. For updates, we recommend following the Spormaggiore Pro Loco channels.
Spormaggiore is located on the Paganella Plateau in Val di Non. By car, it can be reached via the SS43 Val di Non road; the nearest train station is Mezzocorona, on the Trento-Bolzano line, with onward travel by car or bus.
The carnival activities are concentrated in Piazza Fiera, in the town center.
Participation in the festivities in the square is free; registration for the children's costume parade requires a small symbolic contribution. Dishes and drinks are offered or sold at popular prices by the Carnival Committee.
