About Spoleto Carnival

The Spoleto Carnival is one of the oldest Carnival traditions in Umbria, with a history dating back to the early 19th century. In the town in the province of Perugia, between Piazza del Duomo and the historic theatres, the Carnival brings shows, masked parties, music, and festive moments for adults and children, rooted in the identity of the Spoleto community and managed by local associations.

The Spoleto Carnival

The Spoleto Carnival is one of the longest-running events in Umbria: its origins date back to the early 19th century, and over time it has become an event deeply rooted in the identity of the town in the province of Perugia.

Between Piazza del Duomo and the theatres

The heart of the celebration is the spectacular Piazza del Duomo, where the grand masked parties with music and bands take place, but the Spoleto Carnival also comes alive in historic theatres like the Teatro Caio Melisso, with shows and entertainment. An event that combines the popular dimension with the cultural one typical of the city.

A tradition that renews itself

Managed by local associations, particularly the Associazione Manifestazioni Spoletine and Spoleto nel Cuore, the Spoleto Carnival undergoes transformations while keeping alive its soul as a community celebration. It is an occasion for families, children, and visitors to experience the town in the colours and joy of the Carnival period.

Spoleto Carnival — edition 2026

The Spoleto Carnival 2026, the 197th edition, was held in a reduced format on February 8 and 15, without the traditional allegorical floats. On February 8, a free theatre performance at the Teatro Caio Melisso with actor Eugenio Mastrandrea; on February 15, the grand masked party in Piazza del Duomo with music and band. A year of reorganization to come back stronger in future editions.

The Spoleto Carnival 2026

The 2026 edition, the 197th, was held in a reduced format on February 8 and 15, without the traditional allegorical float parades. The organizers explained the choice by difficulties related to storage, sponsors, and resources, defining 2026 as a year of reorganization.

On February 8, at the Teatro Caio Melisso (5:30 PM), a free theatre performance titled "Quei giorni de Carnovale" with actor Eugenio Mastrandrea, with donations to support OAMI. On February 15, the grand masked party in Piazza del Duomo, from 2:30 PM, with music and the town band. As the organizers stated, "a year without parades to understand that things are not done alone but together".
