A site-specific performing arts festival in Civita di Bagnoregio
Spaccature is a site-specific performing arts festival held in Civita di Bagnoregio, a district of the Municipality of Bagnoregio, in the province of Viterbo, in the heart of the Lazio Tuscia. The festival takes its name and inspiration from the very nature of the location: Civita, the famous "dying city," stands on a tuff spur eroded by badlands and ground fissures, a landscape that is both fragile and powerfully evocative. From this setting comes the idea of a theater that emerges from the cracks, digging and bringing to the surface what remains hidden.
Founded in 2023, the festival is directed by Sofia Russotto and Pietro Gambacorta, two young directors under 30 who have chosen to dedicate the event to emerging companies and groups in the contemporary scene. The stated mission is to host new creations and provide a welcoming space and opportunities for artists under 35, offering chances for debuts, discussion, and exchange far from the commercial logic of major circuits.
Spaccature is a festival deeply rooted in the territory: the shows do not take place in a single theater, but spread across squares, streets, former washhouses, disused warehouses, bishop's palaces, and corners of the village where time seems to have stood still. The program weaves together:
The festival rejects the victimizing narrative regarding the fragility of the village and chooses instead to transform it into creative energy, bringing the contemporary scene into dialogue with the local community.
Hosting Spaccature in Civita di Bagnoregio means experiencing one of the most evocative villages in Lazio, reachable only via a long pedestrian bridge that connects the cliff to the rest of the territory. The festival thus becomes an opportunity to discover the Viterbo Tuscia, with its traditions, badland landscapes, and unique historical heritage. Admission to the shows is free, in line with the desire to make art accessible and shared.
The fourth edition of Spaccature will be held in Civita di Bagnoregio (Municipality of Bagnoregio, province of Viterbo) from July 28 to 31, 2026. The title chosen by the management, "From the abyss, to the surface," indicates a movement of ascent that informs both the territory and the contemporary scene. At the center of the edition is a question that runs through every proposal: is there a power that is not abuse? Each show offers a different perspective on this question, suggesting the existence of a dimension of community, cooperation, and celebration.
Among the confirmed proposals is the APPUNTI workshop led by Fabio Condemi, aimed at actors and playwrights, scheduled from July 28 to 31 at the Taborra Auditorium in Bagnoregio, from 10 am to 6 pm. The workshop starts from the idea of theater and representation by Peter Handke, 2019 Nobel Prize for Literature, through texts, diaries, and screenplays. Places are limited and access to festival events is free for participants.
Realized with the patronage of the Municipality of Bagnoregio, the edition confirms the festival's vocation: to welcome new creations and young under-35 companies in the various locations of the village. The complete program of shows will be announced by the organization in the weeks leading up to the event.
Civita di Bagnoregio is located in the Municipality of Bagnoregio (VT), in Lazio. By car, it can be reached from Orvieto (about 20 km) or from Viterbo via the SS Teverina; the village is accessible only on foot via the pedestrian bridge. The nearest train station is Orvieto, on the Rome-Florence line, with bus connections to Bagnoregio.
Admission to the festival shows is free. For access to the village of Civita, the usual entrance fee for the pedestrian bridge applies.
