The tuff-stone village of Sannio transforms into a Christmas wonderland
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
For a few weekends each year, between the last weekend of November and the days leading up to Christmas, Sant'Agata de' Goti sets aside the quiet of its narrow streets to become an open-air Christmas village. Perched on a tuff-stone spur between two deep ravines, the village is one of the most photogenic spots in the Sannio region of Benevento. When the lights illuminate the arches, noble palaces, and stairways, the effect is like stepping into a living nativity scene. The event, titled «Sotto una Buona Stella», is promoted by the Municipality of Sant'Agata de' Goti, in the Campania region, in collaboration with local associations.
The event's name is no coincidence. Sant'Agata de' Goti is deeply linked to Saint Alphonsus Liguori, who served as bishop of the local diocese in the 18th century and gifted Italy its most beloved Christmas carol, «Tu scendi dalle stelle». This historical connection inspires the event's most evocative experiences: guided evening tours of the historic center, visits to sites associated with the Saint, and a traveling museum dedicated to his life, all complementing the festive program.
The culinary experience is led by the «Sapori del Sannio» street food trail, bringing local provincial specialties into the alleys: cured meats, fresh pasta, stuffed peppers, polenta, roasted chestnuts, sweets, and chocolate. The village's taverns and local eateries round out the offering with traditional peasant dishes from the Isclero Valley, a territory also renowned for its Annurca apples and Sannio wines.
The wooden huts and the cloister host artisans, hobbyists, and small-scale producers showcasing Christmas decorations, ceramics, textiles, woodwork, and handmade goods. The calendar features a mix of live concerts, roaming bands, gospel choirs, street performers, children's entertainment, and demonstrations of ancient crafts and recipes, with the historic center closed to traffic during opening days.
«Sotto una Buona Stella» is designed as a stroll for all ages. The ice rink with skating performances, the dedicated children's play area in the pedestrian zone, afternoon shows, and artificial snow are the most popular attractions. The organizers also prioritize accessibility, providing routes suitable for visitors with reduced mobility and offering ample free parking for cars and group buses.
In all previous editions, participation in the event has been free: you only pay for what you consume or purchase, as well as for any workshops or guided tours that require booking. This is why the village fills up on Advent weekends with visitors arriving from Benevento, Caserta, and the Naples area for a delightful day trip.
No official calendar for «Sotto una Buona Stella» has been published for 2026 yet. Based on the two previous editions, the event typically takes place between the last weekend of November and the days leading up to Christmas, with weekend openings in the historic center of Sant'Agata de' Goti, in the province of Benevento.
Until the program is published, it is impossible to confirm either the dates or the individual initiatives. Always check the official channels of the Municipality, the ViviSantagata associations, the Pro Loco, and the Circolo Culturale Saticula, or visit the tourist information point in Piazza Trieste before setting off.
Recurring elements from previous editions, pending the 2026 program:
By car: Sant'Agata de' Goti can be reached via the A1 motorway (Caserta Nord exit) or the A16, following provincial roads toward Sannio. The village is about 25 km from Benevento and around 50 km from Naples and Caserta. During the event, the historic center is closed to traffic, and free parking is available for cars and tourist buses, with shuttle services or short walks leading to the main squares.
The event takes place on weekends, from the last weekend of November until the days leading up to Christmas, with activities in the afternoon and evening. Past editions have also included public holidays, such as December 8th.
Free admission to the entire event. You only pay for food, market purchases, ice skate rentals, and certain guided evening tours, for which booking at the Piazza Trieste tourist information point is recommended.
Wear comfortable shoes: the historic center is full of hills, cobblestones, and stairs. It is best to arrive in the early afternoon to calmly visit the Cathedral, the Castle, and the Church of the Annunziata before the lights turn on. For overnight stays, the village and surrounding countryside offer B&Bs, farm stays, and holiday homes; alternatively, Benevento and Caserta are a short distance away.
