Masks, floats, and street food in the heart of the Irpinian Baronia
Every winter, the Sossiano Carnival transforms the center of San Sossio Baronia, a town of about 1,400 inhabitants in the province of Avellino, into a vibrant community hub. It is a village festival in the truest sense: born from the voluntary work of local associations, it takes place almost entirely outdoors, bringing together masks, a market, street food, and shared joy. For the locals, it is one of the most anticipated events of the year, attracting families, young people, and curious visitors from the surrounding Baronia towns.
The heart of the event is the town square, where a market with stalls and stands is set up. Visitors can stroll through the colors and aromas, stop for a chat, and sample local delicacies. The culinary offerings reflect the simple and generous Irpinian tradition, reinterpreted as street food designed to be enjoyed on the go, amidst the festive atmosphere.
Alongside the culinary offerings, the Sossiano Carnival features its most traditional element: the Carnival Parade. The procession, organized over the years by the Youth Forum of San Sossio Baronia, starts from the Via Piano area and winds through the town streets to Piazza Mercato, where the floats gather for the final celebration. Hand-built allegorical floats, masked groups, confetti, and music: the creativity of the local youth is the true star, with themes that playfully reflect current events and village life each year.
There are no tickets and no stages: just the streets. Children arrive already in costume, adults follow the floats on foot, and the elderly watch from windows and balconies. It is a model of Carnival widespread throughout inland Campania, where the festival is not a tourist show but a collective ritual that reawakens the historic center during an otherwise quiet season. Visitors from outside are met with direct and spontaneous hospitality, offering a chance to see firsthand how a grassroots folk festival is built.
Nestled at an altitude of about 650 meters on the hills of the Baronia, at the northeastern edge of Irpinia, San Sossio Baronia belongs to a land of wheat, pastures, and dairies, where inland Campania takes on Apennine features and villages overlook each other from ridge to ridge. The town maintains a strong bond with its devotions—the patron saints San Pietro Martire and San Sossio, and the sanctuary of San Michele Arcangelo in Montemauro—and with a calendar of events that spans the year: Christmas markets and bonfires, saint feast days, and summer food festivals. The Carnival ideally opens this sequence, marking the moment the village comes back to life.
The Sossiano Carnival is not a massive regional spectacle, and that is exactly its charm: it is the genuine celebration of a community that produces its own fun. Those visiting the Baronia in winter can combine the day with a tour of nearby villages, a stop at local dairies, and a taste of the typical products of high Irpinia, from cheeses and cured meats to bread and wines from the Sannio and Irpinia regions. A short, unpretentious trip that captures the most authentic image of inland Campania.
For 2026, the Sossiano Carnival was concentrated into one big day, Sunday, February 22, organized by the La Stella del Sud association. The format focused on the square of San Sossio Baronia, set up as a market to be explored at a leisurely pace among stalls, colors, and scents.
The real draw was the street food: pizza slices and stuffed pizza rolls, and above all the caciocavallo impiccato, a specialty loved by those who appreciate melted cheese and now a symbol of festivals in inland Irpinia. At the beverage stand, beer, spritz, and cocktails were available to toast in the Carnival spirit.
As every year, the event attracted families, young people, and curious visitors from the surrounding Baronia towns, confirming itself as one of the most anticipated events for the local community and a concrete opportunity to support local businesses.
The events are concentrated in the center of San Sossio Baronia (Postcode 83050), in the province of Avellino: the market and food stands occupy the town square, while the float parade travels through the town streets, ending in Piazza Mercato.
Traveling by car is the most convenient option: you can reach the Baronia from the A16 Naples-Canosa motorway (exits at Vallata or Grottaminarda), then continue along the provincial roads connecting the local towns. There are no direct rail connections; the town is served by the Air Campania regional bus lines to and from Avellino.
Free admission to both the market and the parade. You only pay for what you consume at the street food stands and the beverage bar.
At an altitude of 650 meters, the February weather is cold and windy: warm clothing and comfortable shoes are essential, as you will be outdoors and walking. It is advisable to park your car on the outskirts of the center, as traffic is restricted during the parade. For children, a costume is highly encouraged.
Dates and details are released annually on the social media channels of the organizers, La Stella del Sud and the Youth Forum of San Sossio Baronia, and on the Sistema Irpinia events portal of the Province of Avellino.
