Wine, music, and tuff-hewn cellars in Italy's most vine-covered municipality
Sorsi e Morsi at the Parco della Torre is the food and wine event hosted by the Pro Loco of Castelvenere in the heart of the Valle Telesina, in the province of Benevento. For two days, the park at the foot of the medieval tower transforms into a large open-air tasting venue: local producer stalls, traditional Sannio cuisine, live music, and entertainment late into the night. The event is designed to showcase the viticultural heritage of a village where approximately 60% of the municipal territory is planted with vineyards, earning it the title of Italy's most vine-covered municipality.
The event is held in the Parco della Torre, in the historic center of Castelvenere, dominated by the Torre Angioina: this medieval structure, which collapsed in 2006 and was later rebuilt, is now the village's iconic symbol. During the festival, the famous tuff-hewn cellars are opened—subterranean spaces carved beneath the ancient houses where local families have stored and aged their wine for generations. They can be visited with local guides, and entry is free. Similarly, visitors can freely enter the Casa del Contadino, a small museum of rural life housing tools, furniture, and artifacts of local agricultural history.
Castelvenere is a historic name in Sannio viticulture. Local grape varieties include Falanghina, which finds one of its finest expressions here, Aglianico, Barbera del Sannio, and Camaiola, an indigenous variety added to the national register in 2021. At Sorsi e Morsi, these wines can be tasted directly at the producers' stands, offering the chance to chat with winemakers and understand how the wine profile shifts from one hill to the next in the Calore valley. It is the perfect way to get a concrete sense of an appellation that has gained significant recognition on Italian wine lists in recent years.
Sorsi e Morsi is not an isolated event: it kicks off the Estate Castelvenerese (Castelvenere Summer) calendar and serves as a prelude to the most anticipated local event, the Festa del Vino, which reaches its 44th edition in 2026 (the 43rd took place in August 2025 under the "Festa del Vino e Cantine Aperte" format). Visitors in July will find a more intimate, relaxed version of the same hospitality: fewer crowds, the same wines, and the same vineyard-covered landscape.
The event is suitable for a wide audience, including families: it takes place outdoors in a park during the cooler hours of the summer day, bringing together tastings, music, and heritage tours within a small area. For those discovering this part of inland Campania—Telese Terme, the Titerno gorges, the Matese mountains, or the ceramics of San Lorenzello—Castelvenere is a convenient and surprising stop in a municipality of just over two thousand inhabitants that has built its identity around the vine. Two days are enough to understand why.
The event promoted by the Pro Loco of Castelvenere was held on July 22 and 23, 2026, at the Parco della Torre, in the historic center of the Sannio village. Two evenings dedicated to tasting wines from local wineries "in a festive atmosphere, enlivened by musical performances, entertainment, and good food," as the organizers presented it to the Valle Telesina press.
Alongside the tasting stands, the program included the opening of the historic tuff-hewn cellars and the opportunity to visit the Casa del Contadino, the village's museum of rural life, for free with a guide. With this initiative, the promoters explained, the series of events characterizing the Estate Castelvenerese 2026 began, contributing to the promotion of the village and its subterranean heritage.
On the same evenings, the village also hosted organized tour groups: the Rotary Club Valle Telesina, for example, gathered at sunset in the historic center's amphitheater for a guided walk through the village's history, followed by a visit to the tuff cellars and participation in Sorsi e Morsi. A sign of the role the event plays as a showcase for the territory, in anticipation of the 44th Festa del Vino.
The organizers did not release a detailed hourly program or the names of the musical acts: local sources limited themselves to announcing the activities planned for the two evenings. Contact for information: Pro Loco Castelvenere, tel. +39 347 0497425 and +39 347 1813210.

The underground cellars remain cool even in mid-July: a light sweater is useful if you plan to visit them. The historic center features stone alleys and some inclines, so comfortable shoes are recommended. Those wishing to explore further can combine their visit with a stop in Telese Terme or San Lorenzello, the town of ceramics.
