Three days of costumes, performances, and parades in the heart of the Sorrento Peninsula
Every winter, when the tourist season takes a break and Sorrento returns to being a city for its residents, the Carnival brings music, confetti, and laughter back to Corso Italia. Promoted by the Municipality of Sorrento, in the province of Naples, the event is designed primarily for children and families: there are no monumental floats like in other Italian traditions, but rather a widespread celebration made of lively squares, mascots, street performers, and a grand final parade through the historic center.
The Carnival headquarters is Piazza Angelina Lauro, the city's most spacious and accessible area, just a stone's throw from the Circumvesuviana station. This is where the Carnival village is set up, complete with bouncy castles, play areas, and a stage for performances. During the event, the schedule features circus artists, clowns, jugglers, stilt walkers, and magicians, along with baby dance sessions led by Ilaria Propoli and puppet theater by the Fratelli Mercurio, a historic fixture of local Campanian festivals.
The most anticipated moment is the grand Fat Tuesday parade, which starts in the early afternoon from Piazza Andrea Veniero and travels along Corso Italia to Piazza Angelina Lauro. The procession brings together dance troupes, marching bands, costumed participants, and children's favorite characters: in recent years, the parade has featured Pinocchio, The Little Mermaid, Shrek, the Smurfs, Looney Tunes, and Zootropolis characters, as well as dinosaurs and figures inspired by classic animation. Along the route, interactive performances, musicals, and entertainment moments are designed to ensure even the youngest guests can participate directly.
One of the most appreciated features of recent years is the itinerant Carnival: a caravan of music, mascots, and entertainers that leaves the center to reach the hilly and seaside districts of the municipality. Casarlano, Priora, and Marina Grande host their own celebrations on the same day, ensuring no neighborhood is left out of the festivities. It is a detail that speaks volumes about the spirit of the initiative: more than just a grand spectacle, the Sorrento Carnival aims to be a true community celebration.
Those in the area during Carnival can easily plan a small itinerary: the Sorrento Peninsula and neighboring Campania towns offer other deeply felt parades during the same period, from Sant'Agnello to Piano de Sorrento, from Meta to Vico Equense, and even the allegorical floats of Termini and Maiori on the Amalfi Coast. Sorrento, with its position overlooking the Gulf of Naples and its direct connections by train, bus, and ferry, remains the most convenient base for moving between events.
The Sorrento Carnival is not a ticketed event nor a nighttime party: it takes place during the day, outdoors, in a compact and pedestrian-friendly urban center. Precisely for this reason, it has become one of the most popular winter events for local families, who find a day of celebration at zero cost and perfectly suited for children, in a city that shows its most authentic face during the winter.
Three days of celebration, from February 15 to 17, 2026, for the edition promoted by the Sorrento municipal administration and included in the Metropolitan City of Naples' event program.
Sunday was dedicated to children with "Waiting for Carnival" and the bouncy castle village in Piazza Angelina Lauro, while on Monday, the itinerant Carnival reached the districts. On Fat Tuesday, the "Carnival of Wonders" parade crossed the city center with children's favorite characters, from the Smurfs to Shrek, from The Little Mermaid to Pinocchio, and the stars of Zootropolis and Looney Tunes. All activities were free.
Piazza Angelina Lauro, 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM and 3:00 PM - 6:00 PM. Bouncy castle village and shows with circus artists, clowns, jugglers, stilt walkers, and magicians. Baby dance with Ilaria Propoli and puppet theater by the Fratelli Mercurio.
Music, entertainment, baby dance, and mascots with Cirillino the clown in the districts: 10:00 AM in Casarlano, 3:00 PM in Priora, 5:00 PM in Marina Grande.
From 3:30 PM to 7:00 PM. Grand parade starting from Piazza Andrea Veniero, along Corso Italia, and arriving at Piazza Angelina Lauro. The parade featured costumes, dance troupes, and animated characters: Pinocchio, The Little Mermaid, Shrek, the Smurfs, Looney Tunes, and Zootropolis. Followed by live shows, musicals, and interactive games in the square.
Sorrento is the terminus of the Circumvesuviana line from Naples (Naples-Sorrento line, about an hour): the station is just a few steps from Piazza Angelina Lauro, where the events are concentrated. Alternatively, take the SITA bus from the Amalfi Coast or ferries/hydrofoils from the port of Naples and Capri (Marina Piccola). By car, take the SS145 Sorrentina; during the parade days, temporary traffic changes are expected along Corso Italia and in the central squares.
It is recommended to leave your car in peripheral parking lots and reach the center on foot: during the parade, the Corso Italia area is closed to traffic.
All activities are free and open to the public.
The shows are designed for preschool and school-age children: it is advisable to arrive a little early to find a spot near the stage in Piazza Lauro. Costumes and masks are, of course, welcome.
