About Carmi e Benassi

The MUNAF in Cinisello Balsamo brings together two great perspectives in Italian photography with the exhibition 'Sono le braci di un'unica stella. Fotografie di Lisetta Carmi e Jacopo Benassi'. Lisetta Carmi's famous work 'I Travestiti' (1972) meets the contemporary images that Jacopo Benassi dedicated to her as a tribute. Sixteen works by Carmi and eight by Benassi make up a journey on human identity, empathy, and attention to the margins. Curated by Matteo Balduzzi, the exhibition is held at Villa Ghirlanda in parallel with the tribute to Franco Vimercati. Free admission.

Carmi e Benassi at MUNAF in Cinisello Balsamo

The MUNAF โ€“ National Museum of Photography in Cinisello Balsamo (Metropolitan City of Milan), at Villa Ghirlanda, presents the exhibition 'Sono le braci di un'unica stella', which intertwines the work of two photographers who are profoundly different yet kindred: Lisetta Carmi and Jacopo Benassi.

A dialogue between generations

At the heart of the exhibition is the famous work 'I Travestiti', created by Lisetta Carmi in 1972 in the alleys of Genoa, brought into dialogue with the contemporary photographs that Jacopo Benassi created in 2015 as a direct tribute to that project. The exhibition brings together sixteen works by Carmi โ€” vintage black-and-white prints (1965-1972) and recently acquired color prints โ€” alongside eight black-and-white photographs by Benassi.

Empathy and a gaze on the margins

The two authors, as the curators emphasize, share 'empathy towards the subjects, attention towards what is usually considered marginal'. The exhibition, set up on the second floor of the museum, offers a reflection on human identity and the essence of photographic form. Curated by Matteo Balduzzi, the exhibition is held in parallel with the tribute to Franco Vimercati, confirming Cinisello Balsamo's role as a national hub for auteur photography. Free admission.
