The winter wine-tasting hike on the Villanderer Alm, featuring the finest white wines of the Isarco Valley
Snow & Wine - Villanderer Alm Wine Hiking Day is a winter food and wine event held annually in March on the Villanderer Alm, the vast alpine plateau overlooking the Isarco Valley. The initiative is organized and promoted by the Chiusa, Barbiano, Velturno and Villandro Tourist Cooperative (Tourismusgenossenschaft Klausen, Barbian, Feldthurns und Villanders), based in Chiusa/Klausen, in the Autonomous Province of Bolzano/Bozen, Trentino-Alto Adige.
The heart of the event is a pleasant winter walk along the snow-covered trails of the pasture, led by professional hiking guides. Participants meet in the morning at the Gasserhütte and, stop by stop, reach the various huts of the Villanderer Alm. Each refuge hosts a tasting session: Isarco Valley winemakers present their finest white wines, paired with regional culinary specialties served directly at altitude.
The Isarco Valley is one of Italy's northernmost wine-growing regions, celebrated for its fresh and aromatic white wines. Snow & Wine features local wineries and winemakers such as Cantina Valle Isarco, Garlider, Zöhlhof, Röck, Thomas Dorfmann, Spitalerhof, Oberfurner, and Radoar. The tasting route visits several mountain huts, including the Gasserhütte, the Rinderplatz area, and the Mair in Plun, with a menu that pairs appetizers, first courses, and main courses with the most suitable wine.
What makes Snow & Wine special is the combination of gentle outdoor sport and wine culture. Walking with winter boots on the snowy plateau, breathing in the mountain air, and stopping in the huts with a glass of South Tyrolean white wine offers an authentic experience of the South Tyrolean winter. The event is part of a broader program of wine weeks that some Villanderer Alm huts dedicate to the theme during the month of March.
Chiusa/Klausen, one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, is the reference point for the tourist region that also includes Barbiano, Velturno, and Villandro. Although the Villanderer Alm is located within the municipal territory of Villandro, it is promoted as a destination by the Chiusa tourist cooperative, which brings together the food and wine offerings of this corner of the Isarco Valley.
The 2026 edition of Snow & Wine was held on Saturday, March 14, 2026, on the Villanderer Alm, with a meeting time of 10:30 AM at the Gasserhütte. The tasting route visited the alpine huts: appetizers and first courses with white wines at the Gasserhütte and in the Rinderplatz area, concluding with desserts paired with wine at the Mair in Plun.
Participating wineries and winemakers included: Cantina Valle Isarco, Garlider, Zöhlhof, Röck, Thomas Dorfmann, Spitalerhof, Oberfurner, and Radoar. The participation fee was €70 per person, with mandatory registration for a limited number of spots by Thursday, March 12. The event was accompanied by a photo contest held from March 1st to 14th.
Chiusa/Klausen can be reached by car via the A22 Brennero motorway (Chiusa/Val Gardena exit) or by train via the Chiusa station on the Brennero line. The Villanderer Alm is accessible from Villandro; for the event, the meeting point is at the Gasserhütte.
Meeting at 10:30 AM at the Gasserhütte on the Villanderer Alm. Winter hiking boots and warm clothing suitable for winter mountain conditions are recommended.
Participation fee is €70 per person (2026 edition). The event is limited to a fixed number of participants, and booking is mandatory through the Chiusa Tourist Cooperative: tel. +39 0472 847424, e-mail [email protected].
