The coolest night of the Irpinian summer in Piazza del Sole
In Santo Stefano del Sole, a small town in the province of Avellino nestled in the Valle del Sabato, Campania, the start of August carries a distinct scent: fresh-cut fruit, peaches in wine, and sangria served outdoors. Siamo alla Frutta is the annual event that turns Piazza del Sole into a massive open-air party, complete with palm trees, vibrant colors, and music that keeps going until the early hours. For many young people in Irpinia, this evening is the true signal that summer is in full swing.
The event didn't emerge from an institutional agenda, but from the idea of a group of young people from Santo Stefano del Sole who wanted to create a community moment that resonated with their peers without sacrificing local flavors. The result is a deliberately informal format, closer to a street party than a traditional food festival, yet with fruit and local products always at the center. Over the years, the gamble has paid off: from a grassroots evening, Siamo alla Frutta has become one of the most anticipated dates for youth in the entire province, officially included in the municipal summer program Vivi Santo Stefano and managed by the Santo Stefano Protomartire Committee.
The theme is declared in the name: more vitamins, less stress. The stands set up along the square offer a variety of treats:
The soundtrack is perfect for an August night: rock'n'roll, funk, Latin rhythms, and DJ sets that keep the square moving until late. Past editions have featured bands like The Funckin' Machine and evenings hosted by Radio Ibiza DJs, all set against a backdrop of exotic palm trees, colorful lights, and installations that change every year. There is no clear separation between the stage and the audience: people eat, drink, and dance in the same space, which is the secret to the event's success.
The date of Siamo alla Frutta effectively kicks off the most intense period of the summer in Santo Stefano: immediately following are the celebrations in honor of Santo Stefano Protomartire, the town's patron saint, followed by the SoleArte festival in mid-month, and the Festivities of San Vito Martire at the end of August. Visitors arriving for the fruit festival can easily combine multiple events during their stay, discovering an Irpinian village that lives its August to the fullest.
Siamo alla Frutta is a prime example of how a youth-led event can perfectly capture the essence of a territory: no expensive sets, just local products, simple hospitality, and the joy of being together in the square. For those visiting inland Campania in summer, it is a tangible opportunity to see authentic Irpinia—the one of the hilly villages around Avellino—far from the tourist routes of the coast and much more welcoming than one might expect.
The date is confirmed by the Municipality of Santo Stefano del Sole: Saturday, August 1st, 2026, Siamo alla Frutta returns to animate the town center in the province of Avellino. The event is among the highlights of Vivi Santo Stefano 2026, the summer program that accompanies the community from June to September with music, tradition, and entertainment for all ages.
The mayor has presented the evening as one of the most anticipated events by the many young people of the province, in a program designed to combine the freshness of the new generations with local cultural tradition. The details of the evening—musical guests, DJ sets, and gastronomic offerings—are usually released by the organizers in the weeks immediately preceding, through the event's Facebook page and the Municipality's channels.
Immediately after Siamo alla Frutta, the calendar continues with the Festivities of Santo Stefano Protomartire (August 2nd and 3rd), SoleArte 2026 (August 17th and 18th), and the Festivities of San Vito Martire (from August 26th to 30th).
Santo Stefano del Sole is located about ten kilometers from Avellino, in the Valle del Sabato. By car, take the Avellino Est exit from the A16 Naples-Canosa motorway and continue along the provincial road towards the town. By public transport, the reference point is Avellino, served by regional bus lines, from which bus connections to the valley's towns depart.
The event takes place in Piazza del Sole, in the town center: it is best to leave your car on the surrounding streets and reach the square on foot, as the central area is occupied by stands during the evening.
