Women's cinema from around the world, for over thirty years in Milan
Sguardi Altrove — Women's International Film Festival is one of Milan's longest-running and most distinctive film events. Founded in the early nineties, the festival is entirely dedicated to women's cinema: films directed by women, but also films that tell the story of the female condition, rights, and diversity with a plural and international perspective.
The festival takes place in various locations in Milan, starting with Anteo Palazzo del Cinema, and involves university and cultural spaces such as IULM University, Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, Accademia09, and CAM Garibaldi, with events also extending outside the city, to Pavia. A widespread geography that makes Sguardi Altrove an event rooted in the city's cultural and academic fabric.
The heart of the festival are the competitive sections: Nuovi Sguardi for international feature films directed by women, Sguardi (S)confinati for short films, #FrameItalia for Italian cinema. These are joined by the new section Sguardi Expanded, dedicated to virtual reality works directed by women, a sign of a festival attentive to the new frontiers of audiovisual language.
In addition to the competitions, Sguardi Altrove offers retrospectives dedicated to great female directors, meetings, masterclasses, and career awards. The festival thus confirms itself not only as a showcase for films, but as a place for reflection on cinema, rights, and gender equality, capable of attracting female directors, professionals, and enthusiasts from all over the world to Milan.
The 33rd edition of Sguardi Altrove spans nineteen days, from March 10 to 28, 2026, across Milanese venues (Anteo, IULM, Cattolica, Accademia09, CAM Garibaldi) and the Auditorium di San Tommaso in Pavia. The festival presents its competitive sections alongside a special section dedicated to women, cinema, sport, inclusion, and diversity, in occasion of the Milan Cortina Olympics and Paralympics.
Among the highlights are the retrospective dedicated to Franco-Senegalese director Alice Diop, Silver Lion winner at Venice 2022 for Saint Omer, and awards presented to protagonists of Italian cinema.
