The Sgamberalata is a historic road race that brings hundreds of runners and walkers to Gamberale every summer. Located in the province of Chieti, it is one of the highest villages in the Abruzzo mountains. The race traditionally takes place on August 14th, the eve of Ferragosto, and is one of the most anticipated events in the local summer calendar, attracting athletes from across Abruzzo and visitors vacationing in the Apennines.

A course through asphalt, dirt tracks, and woods

The meeting point is at the Gamberale Lake, a mirror of water nestled in the greenery just outside the village, which provides a stunning backdrop for the start. The competitive race covers approximately 7.2 km and follows a mixed loop of asphalt and dirt roads through the beech and oak forests surrounding the village, offering views of Monte Sant'Antonio and the mountains of the Roccaraso area. Alongside the race, there is a non-competitive walk of about 4 km, designed for families, children, and casual enthusiasts who want to enjoy the event's atmosphere without the pressure of a stopwatch.

Part of the Corrilabruzzo circuit

The Sgamberalata is part of the Corrilabruzzo UISP circuit, a regional calendar featuring dozens of road, cross-country, and trail races throughout Abruzzo. Inclusion in the circuit ensures the event benefits from professional organization, official timing, and the participation of registered runners from numerous Abruzzo sports clubs. The event is organized by the Municipality of Gamberale with the support of local associations.
