About Sfogliatella Festival

In Bellosguardo, a small village in the province of Salerno overlooking the Calore Valley, the Sfogliatella Festival has been celebrating for over twenty years the pastry that bears the town's name: a soft, fragrant crescent filled with ricotta, homemade jams, dried figs, or chestnuts. For a few autumn evenings, the historic center fills with artisan stalls, pastry workshops, traditional food stands, Cilento folk music, and 'Open-Air Cellars' featuring wines from the valley.

A pastry that bears the town's name

The Bellosguardo sfogliatella is quite different from the more famous Neapolitan version: instead of crispy, shell-shaped pastry, it is a soft, fragrant crescent made with local ricotta, dessert white wine, sugar, and semolina. According to tradition documented by the Municipality of Bellosguardo, the recipe was born from the creativity of local women; a fascinating theory links it to exchanges between the convent of Conca dei Marini and the Franciscan convent founded in Bellosguardo in 1512, where friars likely adapted the dough using ingredients available in the Alburni mountains. Since then, the sfogliatella has remained the undisputed queen of all village festivals, especially during Easter.

A festival born to showcase a local specialty

This gastronomic identity gave rise to the Sfogliatella Festival, promoted by the Pro Loco Bellosguardo in collaboration with the Municipality and, in recent years, local associations like Rehub Alburni and the Club Amici di Bellosguardo. The event has been well-established for over two decades: the tenth edition took place on October 1st, 2011, in Largo San Giovanni, while by 2019 the village was already celebrating its eighteenth edition. Over time, the festival has grown from a single evening of tastings into a multi-day event occupying the alleys, squares, and piazzas of the historic center.

What to find in the village

The heart of the event remains the tasting of artisan sfogliatelle, offered in both classic versions and seasonal variations—ricotta, figs, chestnut cream, homemade jams—alongside other traditional local sweets. Everything else revolves around this iconic pastry:

  • Live pastry workshops, with demonstrations on how to prepare the Bellosguardo sfogliatella;
  • Food stands serving dishes from the Cilento and Alburni culinary tradition;
  • Markets featuring local products and regional crafts;
  • Live music, with a strong focus on Cilento folk music groups;
  • Children's activities and family entertainment.

Open-Air Cellars

One of the most recognizable features of the festival is the 'Open-Air Cellars' initiative, an event within the event: the village cellars and spaces open up to offer tastings of Calore Valley wines paired with local dishes and sweets. This formula has made the festival one of the most popular in the Alburni area, attracting visitors from across the entire Salerno province.

Bellosguardo, a balcony over the Alburni

Bellosguardo is a small municipality of just over 800 inhabitants in the province of Salerno, in Campania, nestled at the foot of the Alburni Mountains and overlooking the Calore Valley, offering a panorama that, on clear days, reaches as far as Capri. The village, built on the ruins of ancient Fasanella, preserves the Palazzo Morrone with its 18th-century portal, the church of San Michele Arcangelo with frescoes by Pasquale Avallone, and the remains of the Franciscan convent cloister. Local products, in addition to the sfogliatella, include extra virgin olive oil, white figs, and Silano cheeses. Visiting the village during the festival is the most direct way to understand why this community has built its identity around a single pastry.

Practical information — Sfogliatella Festival

How to get there

Bellosguardo can be reached by car via the A2 del Mediterraneo motorway, taking the Sicignano degli Alburni exit and continuing along the provincial roads that climb toward the northern side of the Alburni mountains. The reference railway station is Sicignano degli Alburni–Buccino; public transport connections to the Alburni villages are limited, especially in the evening, so a car remains the most practical solution. The nearest airport is Salerno–Costa d'Amalfi.

Admission and tastings

As with most village festivals, access to the historic center and performances is free: you only pay for what you consume at the stands and cellars. The organizers do not publish an official price list in advance; sfogliatella tastings and traditional dishes are offered at affordable prices.

Useful tips

  • The village is full of steep alleys and stairways: comfortable shoes are mandatory.
  • Autumn evenings in the Alburni mountains are cool, so a jacket is recommended.
  • Parking in the center is limited: it is better to leave your car at the entrance of the village and continue on foot.
  • For overnight stays, there are agritourisms and B&Bs in nearby towns (Sant'Angelo a Fasanella, Roscigno, Aquara, Controne).
  • Always check dates and programs on the Pro Loco's official channels: the calendar may vary from year to year.
